The wife and I are going to Paris for the first time. Neither of us speaks any French at all. Can someone recommend a useful translator/dictionary for my PDA. It would be great if it had phrases spoken in the native language as well as a built in dictionary. Thanks

Pocket Promt is very cool. Somewhat expensive but it will convert from English to French(other languages available) on the fly as you type it in. Download the demo and try it out

Thanks. Do you have a link? I didn't come up withmuch when I googled it. Also I was looking at the Lingvosoft Suite 2006. It seems to have a nice package with the dictionary, phrase book ( with audio pornounciations) and flash cards to help you learn -all in one package. Handango has it on sale for 59.95 which doesn't seem too bad. Just wondering if anyone has actually used it in the real world and had some feedback? Thanks

I have Beiks BDicty. It contains and gives spoken pronunciation of Eng - French major phrases, and I think it's worth it for that, but I wouldn't call it a dictionary as such.... Enjoy your trip to France; I'm just back after three weeks there.

While on vacation (about two weeks ago), I was in Paris for a few days. Prior to going I bought eLanguage's Learn to Speak French Deluxe for the PC. It came with Beiks BDicty but since it was a free version, it didn't have the spoken thing, just the dictionary and phrases.

However, I found I didn't even need it. Most everyone I needed to speak with spoke English and were very helpful.

I used Japan2Go for a trip last year. Well organized. Speaks sentences, questions - I could just tap and let them listen so I could find the bathroom, ask for a fork, book a room... Reasonable price. They have France2Go, also.

BTW: Check out Metro for subway/bus info/schedules. Free at http://nanika.net/Metro. I've used it in England & Japan - it's excellent.

I have been to Paris twice and stumbled thru my 30 year old high school French. I didn't have the same experience as katwoman. We hardly found anyone who spoke English. I would suggest a phrase book, software if you can find it, maybe download an audio Speak French lesson to an SD card and practice on the way. Even at Disneyland we found people who spoke little or no English. Not to mention I found people were much nicer if you were making an attempt to speak the language no matter how bad you were at it!! Have a great trip & good luck finding a program that will work!
