Guys,

I'm not sure which forum this best fits in, so hopefully this one works. I'm wondering how it is that the OS (WM2003SE) knows where all of the programs that have been installed are stored (ie, how it knows what the installation directory is for each installed program).

Does it keep track of program locations in the registry? Does it merely create a link to the exe location in the start menu directory? Or does it not keep track at all, and only keep a list of what has been installed, and not where it's at?

Like any modern Windows OS the registry is where the this information is kept.
I can recommend Resco Explorer for looking and editing the registry.
A few old programs uses ini files as additional information holders.
