Sort of doing a polls here and see what you guys like to use (freeware) for mp3 pleasure, I'm pretty sick and tired of using Windows media player for listening to mp3, and WinamPAQ is another suck.
First off, welcome to Aximsite.com. This question has been asked before over in the Multimedia forum. You can find the thread here. I personally use GS Player the most since its simple to use and Mortplayer on occasion when I prefer to see a fancy skin and larger buttons. You can find links to these programs in the freeware thread sticky at the top of this forum.

Don't use DRM then WMP will play your mp3s fine. I personally like iPlay from 40th Floor Software.

A Third vote for iPlay, if you don't mind paying $25 or $30 for a player. If you don't want to pay quite as much & want to watch video, try the newly released CorePlayer.
You asked for something free - I might try GSPlayer or TCPMP v0.72 RC1 and see if you like one or the other better.
i don't know what DUWENBASDEN is talking about. what lag? do you have it setup properly? im not trying to start anything, but i have the exact model you have, and i don't believe i've experienced lag (but maybe a time or two while streaming music over wifi) surely you can't mean that..
mortplayer is the best free music player i've tried hands down. you can skin it any number of ways (im currently using myPod) which is by FAR the best skin (portrait OR landscape) i've used yet. with this combo, it's very easy to multi-task [run/drive & switch songs without more than a quick glance and tap] the sound q is good, i've used it with my shure ec2 set, as well as with a stereo-rca adapter, plugged into my car cd player. mortplayer also offers sleep timer and alarm, and a variety of configurations that allow for greater ease of use. i tried just abt every other player available, and nothing's come close!
as for video, i strongly suggest TCPMP! it'll play just abt anything.
Another request here on how to go about purchasing iPlay...My major draw to that player would be that it can "easily handle up to 40,000 files at one time, fast and effortlessly." I hope that part is true, because then I would be happy and play my songs on my computer over wifi.

mortplayer is the best free music player i've tried hands down.
mortplayer sucks... it takes like 10 minutes to build a playlist from my CF drive where no other player I've ever tried does that.
Basically the term 'your mileage may vary' applies to all of these players. I've used GSPlayer (fast), MortPlayer (somewhat fast, but was prone to crashing), and PocketPlayer 2.7-3 (fast, but CPU hog). I've also used TCPMP 0.71 for playing music (crashed after a bit, AVCRP is a bit spotty) along with CorePlayer (decent, but no AVCRP at all and playlist is less friendly than PocketPlayer's).
These days, I use PocketPlayer, and feel I got my money's worth. I'd suggest trying them all and seeing which you like better. Of all the ones I've listed, only MortPlayer, PocketPlayer, and iPlay seem to support AVCRP consistently - TCPMP didnt' work with my HT820 and MS stack (it's for Widcomm only), and CorePlayer's currently missing that. GSPlayer... well, I couldn't get it up with that.
