Trend Micro anti-virus for mobile

I had been using Trend Micro's PC-cillin 2005 anti-virus product on my XP Pro box. They recently sent out an email permitting a free upgrade to their 2007 version of "PC-cillin Internet Security 2007". I took advantage of the upgrade, and installed it. It took me some time to notice that when you enter the main console of IS 2007, a sub-window pops up on the right hand side, listing TrendSecure online services, including a link to "Trend Micro Mobile Security" web page. Trend Micro is providing PC-cillin for smartphones and handhelds, as part of the package for PCs, so if you own PC-Cillin 2007, you get it free. You need to provide serial number of your software to get an activation code for the mobile-antivirus code. If you don't have one, it will run for only 30 days.

I am running Window Mobile 5 on my Axim x51v. I don't know if the mobile s/w runs on Mobile 2003 or not -- when selecting the code to download for my device (Axim X50 from the pulldown list), it did not ask me to specify what version of Windows Mobile I was running. After activating the code on my Axim, the Trend Micro product shows that I have 530 days until product expiration - much longer than the one year of service the PC product provides!

The software does real-time scans for virus, and its Firewall can be set to disable, low, medium or high. It will update its virus definitions via built-in WiFi. Based on the virus definition list, it detects 13 different viruses at this point. You can set to code to scan memory cards in the Axim, when they are inserted. You can filter SMS traffic, and set up your own basic firewall rules.

Truthfully, you dont really have to be worried about viruses on the windows mobile os, for now. Your chances of getting a virus are very rare, and unlike desktop pcs you can get rid of it by hard reseting and restore your data in the matter of minutes.

I'm gonna get to it and program a PDA virus just so people don't have to feel like they are throwing their money away when they get a PDA antivirus program!

Too late --- there has been a virus out for mobile devices for quite a while now. Its actually pretty wide spread and there does not look like any kind of antidote for it for at least a couple of years .....

Yup, WM5.0 .... :-)

out of those 13 different viruses... how many are for wm2003/wm5? I suspect most of them are trojan apps for the Symbian platform...
