One thing I HATE is when I go to download software for my Axim and its in an exe file. Every software developer who doesn't offer software in .cabs should be punched in the face! Is there any way I can extract these exe's to run the cabs on my pocket pc??
You can extract the cab from some exe by renaming the exe to zip. Then unzip the file. In the unzip file, there will be a cab. You can then use that for installation.
This works for me with some programs. I learned this from my reading at the aximsite, but I can't remember which thread I got the info from.
It's bugging me a little that I can't find the source of that tip. I found this thread and they talk about using rar unpacker or www.freecabs.de. I've never tried that.
Make a copy of the exe just in case this exercise doesn't work. With the copy, just manually (by deleting and retyping) change the .exe to .zip. Now, unzip the file using something like TotalCommander in your axim or Winzip in your PC.
As mentioned above, if that process doesn't release a cab file, then try rar unpacker or www.freecabs.de
After you run the exe install, most will leave a sub-directory containing the install cab file in \Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\ (or wherever you installed ActiveSync). That’s how ActiveSync is able to offer to add programs in the Add/Remove dialogue. In my experience, the exe installers simply copy a CAB file to the PDA.
I wish they all came in cabs too. and I wish all cab files downloaded properly straight to my device the first time so I could avoid having to play that game with eazy download. You know where you have to save the link to favorites, copy the blasted thing and then let eazy downloads download it for you because what shows up is gobbledegook.
I also hate it when you get a file called download. isp or any other such thing. sometimes changing the extension to zip, or sometimes cab works there too. ah what the world would be like if the geeks were in charge :)

I agree with the whole concept of just giving us Cabs to download. I just gave up with Activesync and do not use it any more. Sometimes I just don't buy software if they don't offer Cabs.
As mentioned above, just run the .exe on your desktop and it will stop when it realizes you cant activesync. Go get it from the activesync folder mentioned above. It will magically be there.:approve:
Ahh but Andy, I don't want to use a PC. Even my Dell laptop is too big. I've gotten quite spoiled. If I don't use my axim to go on line, I use my I-book, like I am now. I suffer from bifocal lag (the bottom for reading and the top for distance. Who reads any more, at least from that distance.) so the glasses come off when the screen comes on. Great for the Axim, and the i-book is small enough to be a chest top instead of a laptop.
I did buy Missing Sync a while back to sync with OS X, I don't use it much either. I use Gmail online, and I do not have much of a need to sync with my calendar or contacts. I use the SD and CF cards for backing up my programs and documents, and if it weren't for the need to install programs, I wouldn't connect to a computer at all. I doubt I could run those EXE programs on the Tiger here and pull the cabs out.
I love freecabs.de too, unfortunately most of his are the freeware versions. I keep meaning to ask him to add a search this site box to his site. Google gives the code away for a google search box and a radio button to search the host site too. But still, I go there first and will go through all his pages if I have too

That's what I think I will do. There certainly seems to be more and more of them since i bought my Axim. I started with Palm iii e not too awful long ago that I got from half.com for $35. I wasn't working couldn't rationalize buying a pda, but I figured. I couldn't get 2 good Pizzas for that much money so why not. then every one said there wasn't any software for PPCs and look what's out there now. so I figure if we do as you suggest, we should get more developers on boards with cab files offered.
But then again, I have a betamax that I'm still trying to figure out how to hook up to the plasma TV What do I know.
If you find that program let me know
