Looking for (decent) music notation software

Does anyone know of any music notation programs for pocket pc? I've been looking and have found nothing (except Midnote). If Midnote is the only solution, is the full version worth buying?

The problem of midnote is that it will only work okay with an old version of GSPlayer, and it will overwrite it over the new one with the fancy Menneisyys plugins. You might also want to check pocketgrids, a much simpler free program at http://www.civiol.com/. Good luck.

The new version of MidNote is great...
And cheap... Try and download using the link I provided.

MidNote is a program that lets you easily write and play great music, using standard music (staff) notation for graphical input and display. Notes, rests, etc. are entered using drag-and-drop of the elements from the toolbox on the bottom. Once dropped into the staff, they can still be modified (pitch, duration, etc.) or deleted. For block operations there are many edit functions available.

Enter music with fully graphical editor
Each piece can have up to 10 separate tracks.
Six octave tonal range (or 15 with tricks :-)
Musical edit functions like transpose and mirror
Full drum support
Standard MIDI import and export
Polyphonic play through integrated MIDI player (GSPlayer, Mimidi or PocketAMP)
MidNote is easy to use, and no musical knowledge is necessary (though knowledge never hurts :-)

Ok. I did the demo of MidNote and it is frustrating. I can not voice chords how I want to. I have to use separate tracks fo voice them out and then I can not see all my notes on the staff. That is irriatting. I want to write my voicings out on one staff and not on separate tracks of single lines. Now if I just want to use notes and chord symbles then it works fine but I want to voice my own chords on one staff and not just write a melody. I want to do counter point etc. There has to be something better. I am going to try to dig up an Atari Emulator and some of the old Stienberg notation software. That was good stuff. If it could be done on an old Atari 1040 ST it must be possible on a WM5 platform.

I found this thread on the issue:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ind...&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

It looks like not much is available.

I have finished expirements with CastCE and old Atari ST notation software. Bottom line, they can work in theory but only with the built in synthesizer playing the music. For some reason the no one who has built an Atari ST emulator has found a way to emulate midi in/out. The really good products like Notator, Cubase with Notation, and Stienberg Pro-24 will not work because they all use a dongle and apparently software dumps do not do the trick for these because of an intermittent pulse system that was built into their software protection system. But there are other notation softwares out there. That left me with EZ-Score MusicMicro. EZ-Score was the best of the two and is not a bad piece of software. It is sophistocated and will handle almost any kind of notation. The bad things are that the built in synth sounds are very poor and the mouse implementation of CastCE is clumbsey at best so entering notes is time consumming. I loaded a several clasical pieces and they played well (with the poor sound generator). Entering my own music was time consuming.

So, there are some nice pieces of notation software out there for freeware. I wish I could deconstruct them and rebuild them to specifically use the PPC and play samples.

For notation, the best bet for PPC appears to be MidNote and it is not ideal either.
