How reliable is Sprite Backup for WM05?

At Pocketgear and Pocketland, there are reports that Sprite Backup for WM05 is unreliable, that backups failed and could not be restored.

Do you agree with that opinion? Is SPB Backup definitely better for WM 05? Please answer quickly as there is a limited offer at www.pocketland.de till midnigth where we could get Sprite Backup for just € 9,95.

Thanks

Erwin

I own only spb backup so could not comment much on sprite. However as I read from the threads here, it appears both are reliable and sprite has better customizations. Too bad it doesn't have a trial version.

You definitely won't want to miss this review on backup apps.

In my prior experiences - I've a couple Sprite backups fail, never had one Spb backup fail.

They are VERY few and far between though. I think of 30+ backups/restores I've done with each application I've only had 2 or three Sprite failures. But again, not a single unuseable Spb restore.

I've had a Sprite backup fail on restore (certain things could not be restored for some reason, and there wasn't any indication in the logs during/after the backup to indicate I would have such problems). I haven't had an SPB backup fail on restore. However, I (and many others) have had problems getting the scheduled backup to run reliably on my X51v.

I've used Sprite for a couple years and I've used it on WM 5.0 for close to a year (from when the beta came out). I've never had a problem with it. Not one. Of course, I've not had to do near as many recoveries since moving to WM 5.0.

It's a very worthy program, but so is SPB. Either way you'll get your monies worth. Whatever you do, just make sure you hava reliable way of backing up.

I've been having some problems with restore. When I restore, I have to initially ok unsigned programs. This is most frequent if I have Sprite Backup installed on my SD card. When I changed the install to my 51v, only two unsigned prompts popped up. However, two VB based programs have been a problem on restore. I have to reinstall them each time along with MS VB runtime.

I was advised by Sprite support that it is generally better to install Sprite Backup on the device than storage card.

I'm wondering whether everyone else experiences the unsigned prompt? Any advice?

update: well, I'm still having problems with Sprite restore. I've tried Spb backup this evening. It restored without any problems. SK Tools backup also restored well. For some reason, my 51v doesn't like Sprite.

update2: I give up with Sprite. Despite numerous suggestions from Sprite technical support, I can't get a reliable restore. The backup itself is reported to be good. Its just the restore. I'm requesting a refund. I'm going with Spb as my main backup program with SK Tools as my backup.

No problems with Sprite - I don't do many retsores though. I have Sprite installed in the main memory and then create uncompressed, unencrypted .exe's for restoring.

SPB is also nice - I tried it and it would be my first choice if I find Sprite becoming unreliable.

I cannot speak to WM5 as I run WM2003SE; however, any program can and will fail at some point under certain conditions. Any Sprite Backup that was unsuccessful on my PDA also issued a message stating that fact. In any case, a failed restore is far more critical that a failed backup. A failed backup can be re-initiated as long as it is detected.

Have you made any changes like ROM updates? Is the backup made on the same device and ROM?

I personally have had Sprite Backup for about 3 months now. I have had no trouble backup/ restoring anything. I have WM05. As stated above any ROM updates? I am sure that would mess up any back ups you have made previous to the upgrade.

Have you made any changes like ROM updates? Was the backup made on the exact same device and ROM? seems unusual that a basic restore would fail, most of the time ppl do a rom update and dont follow the upgrade proceedure

Nope...Same ROM, Same device. No go. I spent 10 days corresponding with Sprite support. We never found a solution.
