Just went to download the new version of SPBBackup 1.5.5 and get a message saying I have to subscribe to "download protection service" before I can download any updates. This must be quite recent as I've downloaded updates not that long ago from Handango. Anyway I did not agree to pay the $6.99 and just downloaded the update from the SPB web site. Doesn't seem very customer friendly to me.
"Download protection" used to be optional, but by default, it was included in your order. (You could remove it though.) Wow, it's getting worse and worse!
I "bought" a software from Handango just to see if I can remove the download protection. There still is an option to remove software and/or download protection, I remove download protection and update my choice, it left just a software, I proceed to the part where it ask me for my payment information. I had no problem removing the download protection.
Probably rfisher click the download protection option but forgot to click the update?
Funny thing is, I bought the Full Screen Keyboard from them... about a year ago. When I got my new X51V, I seemed to have lost the original proggy on my comp, so I went there to see if I got it there...
I did, and I didnt buy "download protection" at the time, so I thought Id have to buy the proggy again. Well, ithey ACTUALLY gave me the option to buy DL prot for that proggy again... right there. So, for $2.99, I got it back. A year later.
(times and prices may vary... depending on my memory....)
Netsyd is correct, you can always download the latest version of any SPB product directly from their wen site (free of charge)

I just went through a similar experience with a couple of programs. I did the A02 WM5 upgrade to my X50v and thought I would be smart and just download the latest versions since I owned the programs anyway. It cost me each time I downloaded and I downloaded 3 programs. What a rip off.
Could someone in the know publish how they got by the "download Protection".

Download from Pocketgear or the Developer's website. Email the developer if you have your order information. Put all your order information in an electronic wallet program including the download links.
I got fed up with Handango. I cashed in all of my Handango rewards points and now only order from them if no other option is available.

Same here at Ilium Software. If you ever need to redownload just drop us a line and we'll get you set up. We can also get you a link to an older version if you need it.
When I compare the same softwares from PocketGear and Handango, PocketGear is cheaper.
Handango go this reward point thing, but if I can get $2-5 dollars off more on a software, forget the reward points.
"download Protection" for $7 is pretty silly, considering a consumer is already paying more on Handango site.
I, too, think the download protection is not a customer friendly approach for a vendor. I kind of wonder if there were customers allow others to download programs for free[?] and this is why they did it.
Anywho, I had to do a hard reset recently and went to handango to download PI 2007 again. I have sprite backup software but had not backed up in a while so PI 2007 was not there. [sprite is great software but you gotta use it!] Handango would not let me re install.
I was 3 weeks out for the 3 months wherein you can download again so just went to the webis site and got it. my reg code still worked.
I usually just save the programs to my jumpdrive in case this happens and I have to download again, but did not do it with pi 2007.
HOWEVER, I have contacted handango before when I have had installation issues and really, their customer service has been great. I will continue to buy from them.

Handango's so-called download protection is simply designed to get you to pay them more money.
Because of this I avoid using them and choose pocketgear or mobihand. And I usually go direct to manufacturer's site to download updates anyway. But if you've purchased a lot of software it can be handy to go to pocketgear's site click on purchase history and see which software titles have been updated.
