To put it very simple: If I went on a trip and use Pocket Player, at an acceptable volume level and the screen turned off, how long will my battery last? How does this compare to say iplay or TCMP?

In the end, is it battery usage the only thing we are talking about here?
Depends upon the type/age/condition of your battery. And yes, this post is about battery usage only. There are of course other factors to consider when choosing a media player.

The largest part of choosing which player to use is personal preference...

i.e. Do you want it to look pretty? Do you want it to support a wide range of formats? Do you prefer minimalism and low power consumption?

This thread focuses on lowest power consumption and feature costs in terms of how much more power they are likely to use, and if you are going to be able to live with that extra cost if you are using it purely as an mp3 player. It's very much a prettiness vs power usage comparison and it shows you exactly what you need to know.

In summary it tells you for absolute minimal power usage get TCPMP or (if you can stand the abuse) iPlay. If you like something pretty but completely power hungry then WinVibe is your man. There is a lot of other programs in between and what you choose depends on what features you like.

It is also an excellent example of why we like Menneisyys here, it's a very thorough review and tells you what you need to know to get maximum battery life if you use your Axim as an mp3 player.

Pocket Player is the one I'm currently using. Mainly because of the fancy skins. I must be a bit deaf, because I can't hardly hear the difference bettwen one and other on the demo versions...

Yeah, I agree. Menny's the man! The problem is that with all the today plugins, maybe setting the processor speed on auto is not always a very smart thing to do. You can always set it on battery save, at 208, but if it won't get any lower than that anyway, what woulld be the difference?

I think I'm relly confused about this whole deal...

UPDATE (10/31/2007):
  1. HTC has also released a hardware equalizer compatible with most (but NOT all!) Pocket PC Phones
  2. I've started working on the long-awaited Multimedia Bible! It'll kick some serious butts, I promise :)

I personally use Pocket Music 5.0. Even thought it doesn't support album art. I think it's bass boost sounds better than pocketplayer's bass boost there's less distortion.
