Didn't know there were many choices for Antivirus software for Pocket PC.
Only software I have ever heard of being available for Pocket PC is from PC-Cillin.
PC-Cillin for Handhelds appears to be free, did not see any charges for the updates yet either.
On Windows Mobile 2003 it is supposed to have Mcafees.

I agree totally...
Real question should be is an Antivirus program needed for pocket pc?
Was using PC-Cillin but decided to stop as it just takes up space and does not protect in realtime.
I feel the threat will be greater as new OS has been released and hackers who dislike microsoft may become restless after seeing all the hype over Windows Mobile 2003 and decide it is time do some damage.
until I see a virus reported I don't feel I should be worried. Besides I have all software on the Axim and regularly backup data.

Just think of all the memory and speed that would be drained from your PPC by having a superfluous antivirus program.
Besides, shouldn't you be able to detect any viruses associated with programs you upload to your PPC with a PC antivirus program?

I have to ask the question-
IF there was a virus, will the current PPC anti-virus program work?
better safe than sorry OR Freeware App OVERKILL?

The problem with the PC-Cillin software is that they haven't updated the definitions in a loooooong time for the PPC.

This may be a dumb question so please pardon me.. just in case.. but..
While the Pocket PC is in the cradle and connected couldn't we use the antivirus software from our PC's to search the Pocket PC? Since a user can tell the program what drive to scan, couldn't we just choose the "Mobile Device" drive?
If it would work, it would help save RAM, Storage Space, etc...
Thanks..

Ok guys - there are no virus threats to Windows Mobile. At some point in time there was a virus or at least it was reported, but the script hadn't done any damage at all, it was running at the background - that's it. This is the reason that PPC antivirus software is not updated - there is nothing to update it to. So please save your time money and the device's resources...

One has to ask as to whether hackers would be interested in attacking Windows 2003 or WM5. Wouldnt smartphones be the best target, transmitting the virus to other phones, either thru bluetooth or WiFi? Since PDA's are moving aside to smartphones and iphones, I would think that the new targets would be WM6, Symbian, Palm, Blackberries or anything other than WM5 or below. By the way Symantec does have an antivirus for PPC.

But, the reason you don't use a Desktop PC's antivirus scan is the same reason you don't prescribe antibiotics for someone's chest cold; they're completely different beasts, and a virus that works on a PC wouldn't affect a Pocket PC any more than a virus that infects fish would normally affect a human.[/FONT] You could scan for desktop PC viruses which may be harbored on a file... but you wouldn't catch something that'd kill a Pocket PC.

This may sound a tad pedantic, but was it not the case that humans died from avian bird flu and beef importation was banned by some countries because of the fear of humans contracting deadly animal bound diseases?
Though the Desktop PC and the PPC are different beasts, isn't it true that in many cases data is usually synced via a desktop and therefore the antivirus (AVS) on the desktop can be configured to scan data before the transfer to the PPC.
Of course the probability of a PPC being infected is still relatively low compared to a desktop.

The problem is that the flu they had HAD mutated to a form that could infect a human... and that the virus in question was of the same genus (from what I recall) as most other influenza viruses. It's less of a jump than going from fish to human, given that we share more in common with say, a bird, than with a fish. The problem with mad cow Disease is that it's not virus-borne but that the protein in question can't be digested by humans and that it can cause the normal proteins in an animal or a person to deform to the 'bad' shape which causes the damage to the nervous system.
And while the AV program could scan a PPC for a virus, it'll scan for PC-affecting viruses, rather than PPC-affecting ones, if only because the desktop application'll be considered with supporting one OS, and needs low-level access that ActiveSync connections won't give it, IIRC. It's like claiming a virus on an iPhone could kill the Internet...
