Skype on Cell Networks

Just found an article on mobilitysite (not really found, it was in my face)

The article is:
Skype yesterday petitioned the FCC to lay the smack down on wireless phone carriers who "limit subscribers' right to run software communications applications of their choosing" (read: Skype software). Skype wants the agency to more stringently apply the famous 1968 Carterfone decision that allowed consumers to hook any device up to the phone network, so long as it did not harm the network. In Skype's eyes, that means allowing any software or applications to run on any devices that access the network.

The reason for Skype's interest in the issue is obvious: they want to force network operators to allow Skype-enabled calling across their networks, something currently prohibited on wireless data plans. In its filing, Skype argues that this capability would offer "tremendous new sources of price competition provided by entities such as Skype," and that's exactly why wireless operators will fight the plan tooth and nail.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there was just one big wireless network and everyone used their home wireless routers to boost the signal, and we could all use VoIP phones for free?

I also wish it was socially exceptable to ride a St. Bernard around like a little horse.:hide:

This would be hard to do - you'd have to wake them up first. :)

Do NOT under estimate the importance of this decision!

If the Courts say the Bells don't need to allow consumers to choose what they do on their networks, it could potentially open an entire can of worms. If operators are allowed to legally discriminate against services they don't like, customers will be stuck using those (overpriced and / or crippled) the carrier chooses for you.
This primarily effects data transmissions on wireless networks such as cellular, EVDO, EDGE etc... But it does affect ALL public shared data networks.

However, allowing such anti-trust, anti-competition opens the doors for the same thing on other networks, even deprioritizing data packets you send from and to your home and work networks.

An un-equal internet hurts everyone except the huge Telecos.

"Not using our service?" :up_to_som "We'll just take our time with your request, if ever"

Net Neutrality is an issue the Telecos love to muddy with mis-information and lobbyist money.

LOL the US already gets blind-sided (us consumers) by things like that, Skype is definatly a kick in the ass that was long overdue.

They really can say Skype is unfair since it can be used everywhere as much a a cell net. IMHO Skype will win this little spurt.

I sent my comments (shown below) to the FCC. If you think
you should be permitted to use any service of your choosing, including VoIP, over your cellular data service,
I would encourage you also to send your comments to the FCC. The Proceeding # is RM-11361

Quote:
If telephone operators are permitted to legally discriminate against services they do not like, customers will be limited to using only the services (overpriced and / or crippled) the carrier chooses for consumers.

Although this primarily effects data transmissions on wireless networks such as cellular, EVDO, EDGE etc... it does also affect ALL public shared data networks.
Allowing such anti-trust, anti-competition to continue to exist opens the doors for the same thing on other networks, even deprioritizing data packets sent from and to consumer's home, computer and cellular networks.

Please uphold the moral and legal precedent established with Hush-a-Phone v. FCC as well as the 1968 Carterfone decision, by approving the Skype petition.

An un-equal network hurts everyone: consumers, business and innovation.

I don't understand.... I use skype on my Axim which connects to the internet through my Tmobile EDGE connection.

Am I doing something illegal? Are the cell companies trying to make this illegal?

maybe...

Yes, it could be, that depends on your service provider Terms of Service. It certainly would be nice if service providers would allow their customers to use the network they are paying for.
