For The OCD-Impaired: The Wallet Software You SHOULD Use!!!
Hi! If you are just like me; OCD-affected, then besides checking the furnace's gas handle every minute or so, you find yourself using no (to littlE) apps on your PPC due to the fact that you have to analyze every aspect of them (let's say; an Office Suite) to KNOW 100% SURE which is better, and why; thus making it LOGICALLY a decision of picking that over the others... You just couldn't pick one over the other just because its looks! Or its names! No! Not you (me), you need to BE SURE which is the best choice.
So, for that, here is A COMMAND of which Wallet application you SHOULD use. I just resolved this yesterday; after months (yes... months... :( ) of going through all of them to find this.
First; let's say that I focused on specific applications, since there is one hundred and one text encrypters out there (freeware, commercial, whatever) and more than a couple of free Password Crypters. But I beamed upon the MOST FEATURED of them all: SplashID, eWallet, FlexWallet and CodeWallet. So, here is the roundup:
+SplashID
---------
PRO
- The smaller of them all. Pretty simple and straightforward.
- It's the only one that Truly Syncs over ActiveSync; you can have the app opened in PPC and sync, it'll auto sync when a change is made (just as Outlook). In that, it's the best of them all
CON
- Limited by only 6 fields (pretty 'static' thing)
- Labels don't wrap when filling fields; you can't ACTUALLY use more than 1 word or it'll show cropped
- Templates doesn't work 100% well (doesn't refresh their childs automatically)
+ CodeWallet
------------
PRO
- Fully featured; it's the only that allows you to attach any amount of files to a card. Also sounds, custom icons, backgrounds, etc.
CON
- You can only create "My Forms" from other templates; doesn't allow you to create from scratch
- Syncs over it's own rutine; pretty clunky if you push the envelope
- The most awfull interface in windows of them all (at least for me!)
- Doesn't allow deletion of included Templates (*)
+ eWallet
---------
PRO
- The most popular over the other *Wallet apps. Great support from Illium from what I've heard
- Shows cards as... well... virtual cards (rectangle format) - This may also be a CON...
CON
- Doesn't allow to use Custom Templates (probably because of the virtual-rectangle cards display...)
+ FlexWallet
------------
PRO
- Custom icons supported
- Supports images, sounds
- Allows custom templates
- Allows deletion of all included templates (*)
CON
- Doesn't support attachments to a card as CodeWallet does
... WHAT YOU SHOULD USE...: FLEXWALLET! Why? Because it allows you custom icons, custom templates and support the OCD BONUS (*), that it's DELETION OF INCLUDED TEMPLATES; so it can be fully customized (it CAN get perfect!). SplashID would beat it just for the ActiveSync thing but... it's very limited in 6 fields and the no-wrapping of the labels! If it weren't for that, then I'd just be using it! Specially since as it's pretty small, it'd be what would be best for the PPC (more performance, etc.).
So... hope you enjoy this and I solved a HUGE problem in your life... just as I'd had love to someone do this for me! Coming next; I'm still deciding (since December), as which Money Tracker to use... if I decide, I'll try and write something like this again! If you could help me.. .then PLEASE DO IT! I'm looking over SPB Finance, Pocket Quicken (mmm... not likely) and Cash Organizer (which I think is the best, but... many OCD related things block me to go and use it right away!)
See ya and go wash your hands 'till they bleed now you filthy worm! :D
The same thing was driving me nutz. I kept loading versions and unloading them and experimenting and reloading new versions and unloading. hard resetting to get rid of the dlls and installing again. The right answer for me was to just use excel. That way I can check each entry continuously and copy the file to one of my other PCs and check all my logins and make changes, copy back and check to make sure I got it all right. I can now copy and paste to any PC program or web site! copy, delete, update, sync, delete and recopy with out having to hard reset and reload all the apps again.
You're right in that you can't do custom layouts with eWallet.
You can do custom templates however. eWallet lets you rename each field label for a card so you can create your own card types. Once you've edited a card you can then save it as a template. You can also select Edit Templates to edit the existing templates. You can rename fields, have info that gets entered automatically, etc.. You can also delete existing templates if you don't need them.
So although we don't have custom layouts at this time you can definitely customize your templates.
Also, you mentioned that only Splash ID truly syncs. That isn't entirely correct. eWallet offers full sync at an item level for as many wallets as you want with as many devices and PCs that you want. The sync engine doesn't show up in the Active Sync list but it does go through Active Sync for Windows Mobile synching. Plus you can sync between PCs, to USB drives, FTP sites, etc..
You mentioned custom icons as a Pro. eWallet has that as well. It also allows background graphics, attached sounds, and live web and phone links.
This may not convince you that eWallet is the right choice, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the additional features!
First of all, as I said (I think), eWallet and the other apps I tried are great products. I knew also that it syncs at card level; what I meant was that the syncing wasn't intrusive; i.e.; mainly means that there are no pop-ups cause it works embedded in ActiveSync (for the case of SplashID) and you have another item there; thus centralizing the syncing modules of the diff. apps you might install.
In any case, again, eWallet is also a great app. :)
I've only used eWallet and SplashID, but I thought I'd point out, that one of the practical benefits of SplashID's sync mechanism is that I can sync my personal data between my desktop, axim, and notebook (3-way syncing). eWallet couldn't do this for me.

Thanks for the review.

Actually eWallet 5.0 can do this. In fact you can also sync between the notebook and the desktop independently, as well as with any other devices you like and with as many wallets as you like.

An excellent point Dan. We set it up that way on purpose but I can certainly see how that extra pop up could be a pain. I'll certainly keep that in mind as I think through how we'll update eWallet in 6.0!
I've been pretty happy with eWallet for ages now, and I particularly like the card-by-card sync feature, because I have scores of cards now and a full sync of all the unchanged cards as well would take ages.
Does SPB Wallet have a similar sync process, anyone know? I'm attracted to what is apparently its higher level of security than the competition.

Reason: SBP -> SPB

Hi,
People should always check out what is available. Frankly it's what I do and I'd be deluding myself if I thought people wouldn't do it with our products. If nothing else it keeps us on our toes! :)
As for security, please keep in mind that while there are lots of encryption algorithms and levels of encryption, the reality is this...hacking an Ilium Software eWallet wallet by brute force would take around 20,000 years. Choose a good password and your data is extremely safe in eWallet. Throw in security options like auto-lock and lock after too many bad passwords, you're even better off!
