vnc Kindergarden

The previous threads on Vnc looked fascinating so for the last day or so, been researching my options, if I understand this correctly it is a two step process, one install a server let's say to your desktop pc, and then install a client or viewer program to your pda......and then of course are all the options of which viewers and which clients to choose, ........what I'd like to do , and see if you all think it's possible .......... is load all the gps maps on the home computer and then if you need any files while in another state just go into your local library, wifi to your desktop, download files of maps, and then be on your way to sites unseen if it's possible :approve:
So far it looks like Vnc viewer and server from RealVnc will work, any thoughts on this application? Oh and by the way Hello, this is my first thread, I've been an observer for months but it took vnc to make me enter the fray .

I don't know what VNC has to do with anything...

If you insist on going a route like this than it may be easier to setup an FTP server on your desktop PC.

However a better solution would be to pick up a 2gb SD or CF card for 15$ and load all of your maps to it.

Welcome to Aximsite!

VNC or a Terminal Services Client connection from your PPC would show the desktop for remote control, but not necessarily easily allow you transfer files.

There is also the issue of how to safely connect to your home system. For me, I route VPN traffic through my firewall at home to my VPN server, and then I could in theory use Resco File Explorer's "My Network" or Menu-->File-->Network-->Map Drive to connect to the shared folder on my system(s). Downside would be the speed of the VPN connection though...

FTP server would be faster without a typical home-user VPN, but less secure since the FTP port would be open to anyone. Call me paranoid, but I don't think I'd like having an FTP server shared right from my home system for the whole world to use.

Another solution if you'd like to remotely access maps would be to upload them to a folder on a website, possibly a to password-protected folder, and then download them to your Axim as needed, but SilentKnight's suggestion about transferring maps via an SD or CF card would be the fastest and most reliable.
