Dazed and Confused; Multiple Issues since Updating Newsbreak 2.0

I was not sure where to post this thread, because it crosses several areas, and I know that the Application area gets the most hits. If a moderator wishes to move it, just let me know where it is!

Here is my problem, maybe you can shed some light on this. I use a Dell Axim x51v. I do not go onto the Internet often, so I do not turn on my 802.11 often. I purchased the Ilium software program 'Newsbreak' version 1.x, and it 'seems' like it was updating when my Axim was sitting in the cradle, where it sits for hours at a time. In all honesty, because I don't travel very often, I usually get the information that Newsbreak delivers directly off my PC, so I don't routinely read Newsbreak. But when I do, I could swear that the program has updated itself, at least until I updated to version 2.0
Now, in the last 2 weeks, I updated my ActiveSync to 4.5, changed SD cards to a Transcend 4gb, and just updated to the new version of Newsbreak. The Newsbreak program no longer refreshes while in the cradle. Ilium, who does offer great support, ran the gambit with me, without finding a problem. They asked me to see if I could get on the Internet with my Axim just sitting in its cradle and connected, and I cannot. They say the problem is not Newsbreak, but that I do not have a handheld connection with the web.

The first question is; should I be able to just connect with the Web thru my USB cable connection to my PC. Ilium support said that some handhelds do this.

Why can I still get weather updates for WeatherPanel and Journal Bar thru sitting in the cradle? Doesn't the Axim allow for communication with the Internet to retieve information while in the cradle? Does Newsbreak work differently? Did version 1.x work the way WearherPanel works and version 2 works differently? (Ilium says No to this idea)

I also get an error message that Microsoft generates when I try to refresh Newsbreak while in the cradle; it says that I have no connection and if I follow the link, it wants me to set up a modem connection. Isn't there another way to connect to the Internet via my PC and the USB cable connection? Did I turn off a control or switch something that has stopped me from connecting?

*By the way, as I posted in the Active Sync category, I recently have found that many of my contacts now have multiple identical entries (2 - 5) ; both on my handheld and in Outlook. At Aximsite, I see others complaining about this; could this be a problem with ActiveSync 4.5?

With activesync you can configure passthrough internet connectivity. So if your computer is connected to the 'net, then your Ax in it's cradle will also be connected to the 'net.

Your title "dazed and confused" does not describe your problem. Try using a more descriptive title.

Hi...I'm going to post some info here as well even though you spoke to us in case it helps other folks who are offering you advice! Also, as we mentioned to you early on we're talking to the developers (the guys who write the actual code for the program) about this as well...they may find something we've missed.

This is probably accurate. The challenge here is that NewsBreak gains access to the internet the same way PIE does. If PIE can't get to the internet it's not likely that NewsBreak will be able to either.

Granted this is coming from the same source, but yes. You should be able to surf the web, send email, etc. all through the Internet connection your cradle provides.

That's an interesting question. If the WeatherPanel/JournalBar folks are listening some input might help clear that up. I don't think they use a desktop component (where the component on the desktop connects to the internet then sends the data to the device.) I'd be surprised if that is the method they use but it isn't impossible.

Hopefully we can find a good solution for you! Especially since the way NewsBreak connects to the internet is exactly the same way as it did in 1.2.

Dotan, are you saying that you can open Internet Explorer and surf the web when Active Sync is set for the Internet and your Axim is in its cradle?

I'll bet the change to A/S 4.5, one of the Microsoft updates, or something related to your antivirus or firewall software is to blame here.

BTW, I run A/S 4.2 and NewsBreak 1.2 (under a tab in PocketBreeze) and NewsBreak updates while my X50V (WM2003SE) is USB connected to my internet connected laptop.

I just uninstalled ActiveSync 4.5 and reinstalled the 4.2 version that came with the Axim, but still no luck.
I will play around with turning off my Norton firewall today, and report back

The reason you have duplicate contacts is that when you upgraded to Activesync 4.5, it had to reestablish the partnership. Activesync asked you if you wanted the desktop to overwrite your handheld and you probably answered "no". In that case, both sets of data are merged :-(.

To fix this, search the forums. There are programs for the Axim like MemMaid and SK Tools which will deduplicate your contacts and appointments. There are also similar programs for the desktop to do the same.
