You mean that you've never experienced a time where you need a program that does something and after hours of searching you finally find a free one (I repeat FREE not pirated). Some times you can't get all of your software from a trusted source (and let's not get into how you define a trusted source...) Viruses come from more then just pirated software (hey, how do you know it has viruses)

well i can distinguish between legit and not legit free softwere. Something that starts like 3drl.exe from limewire is not something that i would download. But OpenOffice.org is a different story. Unless of cousre 3drl.exe is a known softwere that I read about in axim forum . My point is that if you are really careful and you don't download a lot of files, you don't really need anti virus.

All viruses that I ever caught (and this is like 3-4 in last 10 years) were either in emails sent from people that I knew, attached to legitimate attachments (e.g. a bunch of home photos, or a business email), or on media somebody tried to run on my PC. These people had no idea they were spreading viruses.

No matter how careful you think you are, running a computer without virus protection is very risky. A good antivirus doesn't have to be a resource hog either - look at AVG or Avast, for example.
