One Note Mobile Review
OneNote Mobile
I was peacefully at work on my computer the other day when out of nowhere popped a window alerting me to the fact that Microsoft had released new software for the Windows Mobile platform: OneNote Mobile. I tried out this new software and now I would like to relate my experience to you. I will start this review by saying that I am a huge fan of the desktop one note, and made extensive use of it in my college note-taking; however, I found the mobile version to be nominatable for the year’s worst software award.
Installation
Installation was simple. Unfortunately it was through a desktop based installer and I could not, as is typical of Microsoft, find a cab installer. Though it annoyed me greatly I decided I could overlook this minor transgression. The rest of the installation went smoothly.
The Program
Immediately upon starting the program I noticed that the start menu icon was VGA aware. Unlike many programs there was no QVGA fuzz only a beautiful crisp icon that was ironic considering the horror beyond. When I opened the program I was immediately greeted by a screen similar to that of Word Mobile: a list of files and dates. However unlike word there was no way to filter to documents in a certain folder. First point of order…delete that damn tutorial, who needs those things anyway? I proceeded to tap and hold the file titled “Getting Started.” After getting no context menu as I expected I repeated my attempt to no avail. I then used the right soft key “menu” to open the shortest most featureless menu I have ever seen. The options presented to me were delete, rename, options, and about. Delete and rename were self explanatory though they really belonged on a context menu. I curiously tapped options to see what massive custumizational power Microsoft had bestowed upon me. There was one option! How could they even call it an options menu when the only option was to decide how the document would be sorted? After exiting the option menu I entered a blank document and wrote a sentence or two of text. I was about ready to format my text when I realized that there was no toolbar at the bottom of the screen where the text formatting tools should reside. Entering the menu again I discovered that there was a menu called format that gave the options of bold, italic, underline, or strikethrough, but no option to alter text size or font preference. Below this was an entry titled list which presented to me the option of creating a bulleted or a numbered list. Wonderful! But it should have been on the nonexistent toolbar at the bottom of the page. So far ONM had amounted to nothing but a substandard word processor. The next two options however interested me greatly. Insert picture and insert recording did exactly what they claimed, but with little additional functionality. There were no word wrap or size options for pictures, and the recordings where taken in the memory hogging WAV format.
Syncing
It worked fine. The sync relationship is one way meaning that you cannot sync notes from your desktop to your handheld because of unsupported formatting. All the notes you create on your handheld reside in a special One Note folder called “One Note Mobile”.
The Verdict
Utter rubbish, worthless trash, unintelligible garbage. If this software had come on a CD it would have made a superb Frisbee. Don’t waste your time or memory.
Pros: nice icon
Cons: everything else
