how come nobody mention Dell's little built-in program "Data Backup" which allows you to backup all your data onto an CF / SD card. I have used this many times to clone my Dell onto other Axims and it works wonderfully, very similar to Ghost, which I used to clone PCs.
IMHO, Data Backup is great for backing up all your data as one large file, it also allows you to backup the PIM database only. Of course, if you need to do selective backup, you should look some where else.

It doesn't back up everything like AS or PB Plus does. If you use Dell's backup, you'll be short when you perform a hard reset. You'll have your contacts and not much else...

The built in back up, backs up everything,
UNLESS you chose to only backup database files...
I've used the built in "FREE" backup program many
times, I keep a copy of my backup on my CF card, just in case
I do have to hard reset....
I also used it after the ROM upgrades... restored everything
not just data...

It doesn't handle everything. I know because I got burned by it. It did not back up any programs that are on my sd or cf cards. Thats not a backup in my opinion. The thread title is Ghost for Pocket PC, if it doesn't back up the whole PPC AND the CF/SD cards how can you support something like that? What about everyone who uses SanDisk SD cards and have lost stuff because they reformated their cards. While free, the Dell Backup is crap and should not be used by anyone who is serious about backups.
I would never trust my valuable data to a free solution.
I'm relatively new to PDA's - my Axim is my first ever and I only got it in April 2003 - but thanks largely to this forum have grown in confidence with using it. What I did was a FULL Backup using the built in application to my desktop then I just backup changed files periodically. I also copy the contents of my SD cards to the desktop using AS. I did a hard reset recently to clear off a lot of trial clutter and restored from the desktop - it worked fine. One of my SD cards managed to lose its data (it was a 'made in China one' but not the infamous SanDisk) recently tool, and I was able to simply copy back the lost data also from my desktop. I'm not bothered about backing up indvidual files as I also have Resco File Explorer and that allows me to delete/remove anything that I don't want easily enough. Just my tuppenth! :hide:
Sorry you got burned... Agreed that it doesn't back up CF/SD cards... it just never occurred to me to think that it would. In my mind, I just guess I always thought of the built in RAM like the "harddrive" and the CF/SD cards as "floppies". When I used the backup program, I always just expected I was backing up the physical device and it was up to me to backup my own removable storage... just like I do on my PC.
On the other hand, if I was still in the Unix world, I probably would have treated the CF/SD cards as mounted volumes and expected them to have been backed up as part of the file system. So I can sure see the other side of that coin, too.
Well I never really cared that it didn't until I lost data from the SanDisk SD card. After that happened, it is very important to me. I looked into the Dell Backup utility and saw it did not. That meant it was not good enough for my needs. Not only that, but would you back up your Unix server/workstation on to an existing drive? Not likely if possible, you would have used DLT or something else. What pocket backup plus does is allow you to backup to your PC which in turn you can backup to a cd-rom. I'm not against free, I just wouldn't rely on it for 100% of my needs...
I'm actually trying this program to push updates out to my 25 Axims...
Sprite Clone. This seems to be about as close to Ghost as any program I have seen.
i never expected it to back that up either, seeing as
how that was my destination for the backup file.. and
hell even if it did back itup, my backup file would be well
over 500 MB... with a 256 CF and 256 SD card... plus the
PPC data....
in my opinion, I keep a backup of my SD and CF cards
on the PC.. I backup that data once a month or so...
and do a backup of my PPC storage once a week or so

Its not IF it could. That isn't the point. Its that it can't back them up to your PC. We all know it can't, but why rely on your own memory to make that backup? I don't know about you, but I can't lose anything that is on my Axim.
Pocket Backup Plus and backup your CF and SD cards. Well worth the money in my opinion.
Just for another wrinkle, I've had continuous problems with Dell's backup, in simply getting it to complete. With some help from older threads, it seems tied to programs which refuse to close, or which confuse the backup utility (like theme switcher, Zap, and others). I have to disable 4-5 apps, and cross my fingers.
I've also been using AS's backup, but it is so slow that I'm now looking at the PBP... although I'd like it better if it were half the price. I am looking forward to selective restores, something I was also used to in the unix world.

What if this weren't a rhetorical question?
So to clarify, I am looking to back-up everything. Basically I have 2 x50v's, mine and the one I bought for my wife. I want to setup mine with all of the stuff and configuration, etc. Then I want to 'clone' it (including Main Storage and BIS) so that I can hard reset hers, and then write my back up to hers essentially creating a clone of mine. Then I can just change her info and she's set.
This would make my administration headaches less. Will the built in Dell tool do this? If not, which tool will do this?
Thanks
