you have to buy pocket music to get extra bass, and its not the greatest quality :( try the gs player and adjust all your eq settings to the same as withMP3 and turn on the bass boost, that is what it sounds like
oh for all those app makers that is wat we need *wink *wink a bassboost program seperate from any other prog or you can maybe extract it from gsplayer, or find someway to make it synthenise the sound coming out of all the other players.

gsplayer seems to have the best sound quality. I havent tried withmp3 that much though, and conduits pocket player has to be the worst at audio quality, but i use pocketmusic sometimes, its not too bad, a freeware alternative is winampaq
Been using with MP3 alot, the sound is impressive, but the user interface is the best. Music still skips even with 15 sec. buffer. If I am loading another file of music (I separate them into catergories)with MP3 stops playing to load and skips right into new music, sometimes skips during songs as well. Pocketmusic at least finished playing current song. Another thing, you can minimize sections of PM, WithMP3- Can't do that. With Mp3 has quality sound, but thats about it- will be looking into GS player
Too bad WithMP3 STILL DOES NOT support PPC2003! It has been over six months and the latest download will not play on my Ax. I looked on the support message board and they keep saying "Soon". I'm ready to shell out the cash, but not for something that will not work.
I haven't checked this thread for awhile and I just stumbled across it.
I did like GsPlayers sound and features but I am just to lazy to play with all those settings. The interface on WithMp3 is so much easier for what I would consider about the same SQ. I tried to get the updated version of PM but for some reason I can't get it. I tried to download and it was the same one I had, they claimed as did Phoenix that they have a new bass feature but I didn't have it with my download and didn't receive an email from them as they said I would for updated versions. I even sent them an email that received no response. I have noticed the skipping on withmp3 but I usually don't listen to music in the background and work on the Ax so it's not really an issue for me.
I originally started out with withMP3 on PPC2002. I liked the program and as the review stated above, the sound quality was excellent. I use VBR encoded MP3 files and withMP3 has no issues with them at all. However, I decided not to register the program for the following reasons.
1) I upgraded to WM2003 and it quit working. (I haven't tried out the new version yet)
2) The playlist handling aboslutely sucked. If you moved between tracks in the playlist, or wanted to restart the playlist at a certain track, it would play that track and then jump back to where it originally was in the playlist. Also, sometimes when loading a new playlist and starting on track 1, it wouldn't advance. It would repeat track 1 two or three times before proceeding to track 2. If you tried to manually play track 2 when track 1 completed, it would play track 2 and then go back to track 1. If you wanted to skip a track, it would play the new track and then jump back to wherever it left off.
3) I emailed them on several occaisions concerning the issues I was having stating that I was ready to buy the software if they could resolve the playlist problems. I NEVER received ANY response from the company.
4) I am still looking for someone to properly support a read-ahead cache that can eliminate the skip between MP3 files. None of the PPC based players' caching algorithms are up to this level.
I will NOT purchase this program until they get the playlist stuff fixed. Like I said, I haven't tried their latest version that is WM2003 compatible, but I'll give it a shot once my demo time on Pocket Player runs out. Other than the above, I think the withMP3 is the most promising PPC player out there. I've gotten spoiled on the desktop between WinAmp and MusicMatch, so my standards may be a bit high...
First off, a big thanks to Bulldog for posting such a thorough review. You have really gone the extra mile in your attempts to make it an across-the-board comparison.
As soon as I finish this post, I'm off to download my trial copy. But to confirm Bulldog's review fere are a few other links:

I've tried Withmp3 and pocketmusic, both trial and GSplayer. I must say I vote for GSplayer. WithMP3 and pocketmusic are not working pretty smoothly on my Ax but GSplayer worked like a charm. I didn't made a extensive test on all 3 players but in terms of stability and decent sound quality, GSplayer tops. And best of all, it's free and doesn't need any installation process. Just copy the program file to your PDA and it's set to go. I'm also using GSplayer for MIDI files which is working very well without any problems so far, as compared to PocketMIDI I've used earlier.
Just my 2 cents
