I created a couple of special categories to file my contacts in that I no longer use. I have deleted all of the contacts that used to be in those categories but I am unable to delete those categories. They continue to show up in the drop down menu. They show up when I click on the "more..." option and after each one is a "(not in Category List)" statement.
How do I get rid of these two categories completely?
Editing a contacts category you get a tab to chose from which category shall be ticked on/off.
Above the lowest menubar you see a second tab Add/Delete, there you go and highlight the category you want to delete and push the delete button then.

The categories I'm trying to delete show up when I select the "more..." option, but do not show up when I click on the Add/Delete tab (so I'm unable to select them and delete them). I've tried adding them and deleting them a second time using the Add/Delete tab but they continue to show up in the drop down menu. Any other suggestions?
Go into Calendar > Menu Extras > Categories and see if you can catch them there. They behave different and I don't know why. If else fails go to your desktop and maintain them Categories inside Outlook.

I'm not sure where the "Menu Extra's" option is. I've tried Calendar > Tools > Categories and the contact categories I'm trying to delete don't show up in the calendar categories.
I've a different language setup, your Tools is my Extras. However you found the right section and it behaves equivalent to mine. You need to delete that stuff on the desktop-Outlook and then resync, that will work. Weird :(

The contact categories I'm trying to delete only appear when I'm viewing contacts on my AXIM, they don't appear in the master category list in Outlook (contacts, calendar, or tasks) or Pocket PC (calendar or tasks). The two contact categories in question show up on the category "Select" screen but not on the "Add/Delete". It's appears that the "Add/Delete" screen (while in the contact option) is looking at the task category list instead of the contact category list.
I'm assuming I'm not the only person using Pocket PC that wants to use different category names for contact lists, calendar events, and task lists, am I?
As far as I understood, they are shared all over the different associations; that at least would make sense for me ;)
I can't fathom your problem by any testing :(
Mind you post the category names in doubt?
I'll try to generate, use and delete them on both my Ax's in different sections then to see what comes out.
I've 2 profiles on the desktop, which comes in handy just to test such weird stuff

You are not alone bulldozer. I've had the same problems. After I deleted them (I thought), I've experience a problem in Contacts when I click on the All Contacts drop down button. It changes to "Show", but will not allow me to look by category anymore. Don't know what eles to tell you except I know use the Company listing to display my "categories"
Herb, the category names I'm trying to delete are "LP Design CoE" and "Tractor Products". I'm pretty sure I selected some contacts, created the category names in question, and then later decided to just use "Business" and "Personal" categories. (I didn't think it would be so simple to scroll through names when I first started so I set more categories than I needed.)
Thanks again for trying to help.
What's the sequence of events that leads to the "(not in Category List)" notation after a category name. If we could figure that out we might be able to solve this problem.
If you delete a categorie on the PPC, which is still connected to any contact or calendar item, you are caught. There is no way (at least I found none, except deleting the complete item) to correct the problem on the PPC, you have to go to the Outlook desktop.
In Outlook chose the view Phonelist in Contacts, or Active dates in the calendar. In the column Category you can easily identify which entries need to be edited. You can't sort on this column though. There is a view sorted by Category, but you won't find them dead ones in there.
You have to go through the list and edit those dead entries manually. Call the items pane and delete manually the dead category entry.
Sync and be happy;)
Btw. This excercise cleant my PIM drastically as a side effect:love:
