Trouble downloading Bellsouth POP3 mail
I am currently trying to dowload my bellsouth.net email directly into my Axim using a Targus Pocket Modem (56k V.90) and the dial-in telephone number provided by Bellsouth. I have established a separate service within the Axim Inbox using a "dial up" connection setting which identifies the Targus modem. I have tried every variation of the connection settings and still cannot get it to work. It appears to dial into Bellsouth ok ... the pocket modem lights up ... but within 1 to 2 minutes the connection is dropped with an error message that states my user name or password is incorrect and to please reset my settings and try again. I have double checked my user name and pw and they are correct so I can only think that this is more of a generic error message.
Does anyone know of any issues with trying to download email from a Bellsouth.net account? Any suggestions on how I might get this to work?
Thanks in advance ...

Have you checked the dialing patterns to see that they are correct?
I justed checked my bellsouth e-mail and it worked fine.
Did you setup a new connection for Bellsouth (start, settings, connections, connections)? This is where you put in the number you want to use for the modem to dial as well as selecting your modem. Leave the advanced setting as is.
Go to the inbox and select new service, pop3, enter your user id and password along with income and outgoing mail server (mail.bellsouth.net)

Thanks for the feedback. Initially set up the service as you outlined but went back through all steps again just to make sure but still get an error statement saying I need to check my user name and/or password. I am beginning to wonder if there is a file used in the process that has somehow become corrupted. Given time invested in this problem, I am to the point of putting it aside until I can purchase and load Microsoft's new PPC03. Hopefully starting with a new, clean operating system will help me establish a connection.

Have you tried a soft reset? Sometimes that helps. Also, I would check my modem. Can you log onto your ISP and surf the web?
Also, if your phone supports IrDA then change the modem to generic IrDA and try to connect and get your e-mail. Be sure and line up the two ports so they can see each other. If that works it may be your modem and not your settings.
Good luck! :D

Did the soft reset with no improvement. I haven't tried to access the web when it is in the cradle at home but I know I can do it at my office (I have a cradle hooked up at both). My problem is trying to use a dial-up modem using standard phone line while on the road.
I thought about buying data cable to hook pda to phone (and still am). However, this will get me to my web based email at bellsouth which is ok but when I am on the road, I want to be able to dial in, download email, sign off and take my email with me to read when it is convenient (vs having to stay online to read my email which I understand is my only option when accessing my email from the web).
Thanks...

What is your cell phone model and make?
If you buy a cable to use with your cell phone and Axim you can still get your bellsouth e-mail just like you would using your Targus Pocket modem. The only difference is your using wireless phone instead of a land line.
At home do you use a dial-up connection for your computer to get your bellsouth e-mail? If so and you can get your e-mail you either have a faulty modem or a wrong setting.
If your cell phone has an IrDA port then a easy was to check your settings is you use that modem and try and connect. If you can then you may have a bad Targus modem.

My cell phone is a Samsung 8500. It does not have IrDA. I use the telephone line at home with DSL service. I used my Targus modem that is clipped into my Axim at home and it still did not work. It may be the modem but it looks like it is successfully dialing into Bellsouth network and then drops me. I am not ruling it out, just not convinced. A friend in the office has the same modem for his Axim. We swithed modems with me and he could use mine to dial into his AOL acct but I still could not get his to work on my Axim.
Thanks for the info on the data cable. I will probably go that way regardless. The problems I am currently having with the dial-up modem has turned into a challenge of sorts.
Bellsouth tech service finally responded to my email. They gave me some tips to resolve the problem; one of which was to use my user name WITHOUT the @bellsouth.net. I plan to try them out while on the road tomorrow. Too late to mess with it tonight. Going out of town tomorrow morning not to return until next Wednesday.

Taking the @bellsouth.net off your user name should work. I have Bellsouth DSL and to get your e-mail using DSL you have to include @bellsouth.net but when you use dial-up you do not. Not sure why that is but this should solve your problem!! :D

I connect to BellSouth.net from my Axim using DSL. I don't have the @bellsouth.net in my username, just the 8 character username. That is probably what's causing your problem.

I am having trouble as well. I can access my work email using the POP3 settings, but can't access my home broadband(cable) account. It pops up the password screen and says it can't download mail. I have tried EVERY combination of username/password/domain etc etc etc. Very frustrating.
Anyone have any similar problems?

I have given up trying to figure it out. I have used every combination possible and I still get an error message that my user id or password is incorrect. Something is interfering with the communication or there is some kind of "noise" that I cannot seem to irradicate. I changed the user name as reflected in prior thread comments ... didn't help. More recently I thought it was due to initially syncing my Axim with my work pc first then home second, reasoning that it might have loaded certain parameters when it tried to sync with my office email that causes problems with my home Pop mail service. I deleted all partnerships and started fresh. Still no success!
Instead of continued frustration, I am going to wait and see if the new Windows Mobile 2003 will resolve my problem. If it doesn't, I will resort to a hard reset.
