hey this is a repost but i'm still looking for the answer...

I notice on many themes people have managed to dim the background on the start menu dropdown. So far I've had to set background pix transparency to get the black text to be readable, but it ruins the picture and is limiting...

how'd they do that...?

A lot of people do just use transparency to do it. If the picture is not the same one as the 'wallpaper' though it doesn't look as nice. In Adobe PhotoShop (and probably in Paint Shop Pro) you can adjust the saturation level of your image without affecting the transparency. You can also leave the saturation but adjust the 'lightness' of the image. I'm not sure which ones you are talking about but if I wanted to do what you are talking about, that's how I'd do it.

PhotoShop is fairly pricy if you don't actually use it a lot and need it for your work but Paint Shop Pro is an excellent program, very high powered for a really low price (about $79-$89 compared to $600 for PhotoShop.

Thanks Quinn...

I use PSP for all my graphic stuff, but on some themes I've seen a dark background picture but clearly the drop down menu dims the portion of the background under the menu in order to allow the text to be more readable. does that make sense?

OK yes, that's one of those occasions where the drop down is actually the same image. If you use theme generator just choose to use the same image for the start menu as for the background. If it doesn't lighten enough for you then use the same image but a lighter version.

Thanks... Sometimes I look but don't see...

I've used the generator probably 50 times and didn't realize it was also asking me for a pic for the start menu.

what a dummy...

Yeah or you could get something like PocketFacelift and change the color the the start menu text to something you like better, or thats more readabel for that particular theme you like.
