Pocket Backup by Sprite Software

I had heard some folks talking about this as THE software backup utility to use....and since the backup via ActiveSync is slow as a dog, I figured I'd see what the trial download of PB+ could do for me.

Wow is this util fast! I compressed a backup of my system (not including e-mail as I do not sync that) and it crunched down the back up to about 8.5MB, and shipped it over to my SD card in just over 5 minutes. Quite impressive!

I've used the Space Detective util, and while it does duplicate a few things I have in other utils (or thru freeware apps) I can still see how this, with the other bundled utility that comes with PB+ would be a super value for 29.95USD

I've looked into overclocking my CPU, and was a touch concerned without a good backup handy. I think I can safely say that Pocket Backup will more than meet my back up and restoration needs. I highly recommend this to folks who are (like me) always on the look out for new and great software for their Axim/toy/child.

I am glad another person is satisfied with Pocket Backup Plus. It is definitely one of my favorite applications.

Pocket Backup Plus just saved me. Monday morning (when else) I fired up my Ax only to find it doing a hard reset. Fortunately I backup daily so, aside for being inconvenienced for a day (man, what a loooonnnngggg day with no Ax) all my contacts, all my appointments, all my tasks and all my databases were successfully and quickly restored. And, it could have included my card as well. Did you catch that, could have. I could have selected one, every other, all, etc files to restore.:exc:

I wonder if I can use this to swicth Axims? I have a Axim Basic but just ordered an Axim Advanced with WM2003 and I want to convert everything over... Do you think I can use this to backup the Axim 300 and then restore it to the Axim Adv 400?

I seem to remember someone saying that you cannot restore a 2K2 backup to a 2K3 system. Can someone confirm?

I just don't see the point of purchasing a back-up program for PPC. I sync daily with my PC so all my PIM and "My Documents" folder are always backed-up to my PC automatically. If for some reason I have to hard-reset, it takes a matter of 5 minutes to restore all my PIM and RAM files and less than an hour to reinstall all my apps.

I actually prefer reinstalling apps over restoring as it gives me the chance to start again with a clean registry. I keep a running list in Notes of the programs I need to install, in what order, and where to install them. Each hard reset for me is like Spring cleaning, I get to start out fresh again.

Just curious.. have you not tried the backup app that is built into the Axim? It will also backup directly to the SD Card.

I find it to be just as fast and just as thorough as PocketBackup Plus, which I trialed.

I have found the fastest way to perform a backup up is to backup the RAM on the Axim to either a SD/CF card, and then put the SD/CF card in a Card Reader on your PC, and back that up. Leaps and bounds faster than anything else, even a Pocket Backup Wifi connection to the Axim takes an eternity in comparison.

So... all I was using PB+ for was doing a backup of the RAM to my SD card. The Built-in backup program does the same thing just as well, just as fast, for me.

Despite a 2 week trial, I found no compelling reason to register it, and deleted it from my Axim.

Well, in my case, I bought Pocket Backup Plus when I was going to Florida for two weeks and would be away from my computer. I was terrified that I would have to hard reset, and not be near a computer to reinstall anything.
As for reintalling over restoring, I had to reinstall everything once after a ROM upgrade, and it took me over five hours. :crooked:

I've not actually tried the back up utility built into the device; but I've found that I usually prefer the functionality and extra robust features of 3rd party utils, as I prefer PI as my PIM, Icbar to the Dell Switcher, and other such types of built in utilities. I get a small bit of satisfaction when I've found a new proggie that I can use and install on the device. Of course I prefer freeware but I'm not opposed to laying down 20 bucks for something (and most PPC stuff is fairly inexpensive)

I don't know what the cost of a card reader for a PC is (so that I could sync up the SD/CF cards, but if its comparable to the software, I'd be more like to use the software solution, just to avoid have more peripherals on my desk.

And I've lost 2 HD's thru no fault of my own, so I'm a bit leary of just backing up to my desktop thru AS, which is slow any way.
