Ok so I am brand new to the PDA scene and have had my Dell about 10 days. I have been using Outlook and the calander that came with the unit to try to set appointments etc. This to say the least has been terribly disappointing. Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) PIM? Also I am looking for a finance manager. Nothing too hefty. Just tracking checking account, savings account, 401k, etc. Thanks in advance for any helpful hints.

You can download Microsoft Money for the Pocket PC from their web site (for free). I haven't used it yet. My Axim is here (but under the tree)!

I believe Microsoft Money (pocket version) comes with the Axim. They also make a Pocket Quicken.

I use PocketInformant as my PIM. I like the layout and the flexibility. It uses the standard databases, so when you sync it all works, but it's a lot more useful. I think they have a trial version. http://www.pocketinformant.com/
I think they are offering 25% off for some time. It wasn't terribly expensive in the first place. Less than US$20.

Pocket Quicken is only for Palm. They are apparently working on a PPC version but it is not out yet.

Well, downloaded PocketMoney from Microsoft last night. So far looks decent but I was hoping for a faster transaction entry system for ATM withdrawls, credit card purchases, etc. Hoping I could pop in, enter the amount, maybe a drop down transaction type and get out. My bank does offer very good compatability with Money so that may be a consideration but I would have to buy the full version.
Still looking for a good PIM as I am very frustrated with Outlook's excuse for a calander/task/contact system.
Also looking for a map program that is fairly inexpensive. Doens't need to be hyper accurate as I have no need to know every back alley down to 1/16". Just basic map mostly for Phoenix Az, maybe a few others if I travel.

PIM - Try Pocket Informant. I've been using the demo version for the last week or so and it's pretty impressive. I think the site is www.pocketinformant.com
Finance - I'm using Pocket Quick which synchronizes nicely with Quicken. Never used Money or Pocket Money so can't compare them.
Map - What do you want to do with the map program? There are fairly cheap programs with simple maps, but if you're looking for turn-by-turn directions or guides, you're going to pay a little more. Try looking at the downloads section of www. pocketpc.com (Microsoft-hosted site for Handango software retailer). They have a good collection of inexpensive mapping programs and most have demo versions. I'm using Mapopolis because it has turn-by-turn directions. They have several levels of features you can buy. If you think you might need turn-by-turn directions or GPS support in the future you might look at their basic packages.

Well I use Agenda Fusion as my PIM, its pretty great, it lets you customize almost everything, set reminders, set appointments, it integrates all aspects of your PIM and contact list with notes and alot of different things like that, it also gives you several different views of your choiuce, from months, to weeks, to days to years, its a great tool, another must have app in my book, the newest version is great and I would reccomend it to anyone looking for a great PIM.

For finance organizing I have heard great things about PoQuick Money Enterprise, I have it but have not really tried it out as I am not in need of a finance manager for my pocket pc, I do reccomend you take a look at it to see if you like it:

How about pocket streets from ms for mapping cheap but can get the job done. Like everything thing else cheap in price = less features ,this holds true in the ppc software too

Well I love pocket Money I have the full version (have used it for years). I had a program on my Palm that I was never very happy with. So Pocket Money for me is a prayer answered. I agree the entry could be a little faster but I will deal with that. I have always liked MS Streets so I have been playing with Pocket Streets. I think the maps are good in detail. I don't know about a long roadtrip. Just thought I would throw my .02 in...

Just a couple questions.....
Good info above on different finance software....my wife has an Axim as do I, and one of the things we use it for is a checkbook register. MS Money works well for this. One thing it doesn't do (I don't think so anyway) is sync my checkbook register with my wifes. Is this possible....or is there any software that would make it possible? In a perfect world, I would like to add my stuff throughout the week, my wife add her stuff throughout the week, and then maybe every week or so, I point my Axim to hers and beam my stuff to her and she beam hers to mine....and it would then combine the checkbook registers. Right now, I am manually entering my info (as expected), but then I just grab her Axim once a week....and copy her info into mine by hand. As you can imagine...that gets old after a while. Does anyone know of any finance software you can beam between Axim's.
Or....if I load MS Money on my desktop...can I sync my Axim to desktop, my wife sync her Axim to desktop to converge the info? Thanks in advance.
Also....I've been hearing alot about Pocket Streets....seems to be pretty good....do I need to have internet access from my Axim to use this? Or are all the maps included in the app?
-Thanks

For Streets you do not need internet. You can get updated information such as construction info from the net but you don't need it to run Streets.
As for the Money problem I am not sure if you could change the settings so that you could sync both and have it work. I would try to sync yours and then your wifes and then yours again. I don't know if that will work but I would give it a try. Good Luck.

I've used both Pocket Informant and Agenda Fusion on my Axim. Of these two, I liked Pocket Informant better due to its integration into the system. That is, it ties itself into and substitutes itself for the built-in PIM apps. I run Dashboard and I liked the fact that I could click on a task on the Dashboard display and Pocket Informant's task viewer would load instead of Outlook's. Unfortunately, PI appears to have some programming issues that need fixing before I would buy it. The previous version ran so slowly on my 400MHz Axim that I removed it after about 20 minutes use. I had instances where it took the calendar 15-20 seconds to load or PI would disappear for 3-4 seconds when I called up the options screen. I downloaded their latest release and it is vastly faster than the previous one on my Axim so they must have fixed something. Unfortunately, after about an hours use, I still had several more instances where the screen did not refresh properly or entirely when I launched the calendar app. This left blank or clear spots that made it impossible to use the calendar. This was somewhat random, but it happened enough that I removed Pocket Informant again. I even did a hard reset, reinstalled just PI and still had the same problems so I know it was not an interaction with some other program that was causing the problem. I will be interested if any other Axim owner have similar problems.
Agenda Fusion does not integrate itself into the system like PI does. As a result, when I click on a task in Dashboard, the standard Outlook task application loads instead of the Fusion module. Yes, each Agenda module can be linked to the Axim's buttons, but I got used to clicking on the tasks instead of pressing a button and then the task. I will say that Agenda Fusion appears to be dramatically faster than Pocket Informant and has never given me any display or performance problems like PI did. I have exhausted the trial period for Fusion so I am waiting for PocketGear to offer a discount on Fusion (they said they will be doing so) and I plan to purchase it. That is, unless a fixed PI is released before then.

I would go with Pocket Informant as a PIM as well. I have been using it for over a year now and like all the added features and organization of this PIM. Like dbman says it ties itself into the device itself replacing button mappings etc....
Plus you can't beat the service and support that the makers of Pocket Informant provide.
I paid I believe 25 or 30 dollars for version 2.5 over a year back. I am now on version 3.45 and I have not paid a solitary cent for all the additional updates. They are quick to respond to questions comments and suggestions and when I lost my license key and only had my name to provide them with proof that I had purchased it they emailed me back in less than 24 hours with the key I had purchased close to 8 months prior.
Give the demo a shot and see for yourself.
