There are third party today screen plugins that will show CPU util etc. Check Handango and there'll be a few if that's what your after.

ooh does it show cpu usage?, except it doesnt do much good if i cant see it, i know its not doing nothing if no progs are open and its on the today screen

I think it might have had a mini-meter on the top bar. Can't remember, sorry... It was alos 2002.. No idea if it would have worked on 2003.. Do a search on handango.. Sure you'll find a few to choose from.

Might have been by Rhino, or Rhino Stats or someone like that..
