eBook readers - what are my choices? PDF too...

Adobe Reader 2.0 sucks - text is blurry. XPDF is also not easy to use for reading eBooks.

For PDF format, what are the best choices of software? I want clear text!

Also, what about other formats? I tried MS Reader but I can't even get the damn thing to open up files! So, I use uBook which is OK I think...but it doesn't do PDF!

I have Axim x51v, btw.

VGA hack? Does it work with XPDF?

Could you take a screenshot of how Adobe would look like with that hack?

I'm mobile at the moment, but you should be able to find previous shots using the search button

For reading "real" ebooks I use MS Reader or Mobipocket Reader - both works nice. I don't like the PDF format for ebooks - especially not on a PDA.

I like Mobipocket Reader, you can anotate, mark, and link portions of books etc. That is fantastic for professional reading.

iSilo is very good for grabbing portions of web sites and on line journal articals with the iSiloX utility. I like iSilo the best for the reading experience. I wish they would up date it with anotation features.

Adobe Reader with the VGA hack is the only real solution for reading encrypted Acrobat books. It has problems and it hogs memory but it is the only solution for the encrypted books.

What about ubook?

Also called microbook, or µbook. Brilliant reader, but you need to load pdf files on a pc, save as text from Adobe, open in Wordpad or Word and save as rtf. Then copy to your pda.

I know this sounds like a hassle, but it's worth it to read in ubook!

Cheers, Kronalias

There is a program called forceHires that i have on my PDA to make all these old programs that are perfectly capable of high res actually use it. it shows up as a control panel.

i have no idea where i got it, i think all the instructions were in japanese. the program itself is english though.

anyway, i'll just throw it here for anyone who wants it for a while

The gsgetfile.dll and forceHires.cpl need to both be put in your PDA's /windows folder. run setSecurity if the 'unsigned code' warning gets annoying.

then you can toggle on and off hires for programs of your own choosing from your PDA's system settings tab. it even makes Microsoft reader's image renderings look much better.

i reccommend setting default zoom to 200 or 300% in adobe reader after doing this. reader's settings dialog will be messed up while hires is on, but just turn it off, make the changes, and turn it back on again.

The file turns up garbled.
Hint: Copy the above link into EzDownload on your ax and get the rar file
