Software for college?

I am marketing, finance, business major.

What software would you recommend?

I was thinking some kind of homework/assignment task type of software would be helpful.

Anything else?

You might check if your major department recommends certain programs. Check, too, with your school's IT office. Many colleges have agreements through which students can buy standard software (like MS Office for Vista and such) at discounted rates. I've never seen pocket pc software in such transactions, but windows software is readily available for this.

For pocket pc, you might consider something like Pocket Informant for tracking schedules, assignments, and tasks. There are student-oriented programs, too; check the lists in http://www.aximsite.com/boards/vbart...e&articleid=81

PhatWare has a sale going on right now on their notes applications. Those are quite handy.

If you do serious writing and spreadsheets on your ppc, take a look at the excellent software by SoftMaker. In fact, they make their office applications for both ppc and windows, and they offer very, very generous discounts for educational use. It is probably the best deal out there on some superb software.

I'd second all of the above. PI is avery powerful and excellent overall organizer, for tasks, contacts, calendar etc. PhatNotes is a superb note-taking application.

Two other product categories you might want to give thought to are - a good digital wallet app (for storing all the myriad username / password / card info you already have or will accumulate) and a good RSS reader / aggregator, to help cope with information overload. Luckily, these are both areas where there are not one, but several excellent PPC apps available. For digital wallets, eWallet, Spb Wallet and several others are good choices. For RSS readers, NewsBreak, Spb Insight, FeederReader along with several others are great products.

Funny... I use WM5 contacts and under myself for a contact in NOTES I placed all my credit card and needed info...

RSS reader.... I don't use that and can't see how it can help with classes anyway.

I am still looking for a working German-English-German dictionary...free.

One of the key features of a digital wallet app is that it not only stores your crucial information, but *protects* it - via strong encryption, password protection etc. Keeping credit card info in Contacts is not so great if your device falls into somebody else's hands.

RSS reader = fair enough - just seemed that with topics like marketing and finance, there might be a lot of web sites that are sources of useful info for you all the time - then it becomes hard to visit them all - so an RSS reader is a very effective way to quickly scan through headlines and article summaries without having to visit each site.

No, you cannot password protect individual contacts with the core contacts application.

The Pocket PC already has excel and word installed on it - those are probably the two most frequently used applications you'll need. You may want to install a PDF reader for any articles that may be assigned to read.

To manage your schedule and project deadlines, all you need is the existing calendar application. If you want more bells & whistles, you can get a good PIM applications (Agenda Fusion, Pocket Informant, etc.)

You might want to get a keyboard for the Pocket PC, and maybe a financial calculator application for it, but you probably will not be allowed to use the pocket pc during exams (I teach college and do not allow students to use their Pocket PCs, cellphones or any other electronic gadgets during exams).

And you'll want to get an SD or CF card to accommodate your files, music, etc.

I would get HandyCards. It is a flash cards program. It is the best. I have tried them all and it is the best. I am a heavy user of the program. I have it open when I am reading journals to jot down facts I want to be able to recall. It can store both picture and sound files as well as text. You can edit cards on the machine and there are several testing methods. It will do multiple choice and single response. It keeps statistics on your performance. It comes with PC utility for making cards too but the interface on the PPC is so good I never need to use the PC utility. It is available at HandyMed.com.

When I took my Palm m100 to college way back when, I used 4.0Student and found it very useful. Sure, you can use the native tasks and notes apps for keeping track of assignments etc., but I liked having all of my school info in one place and conveniently linked. The program is still around and has no doubt been updated to be even better than what I used. Another student app I see frequently mentioned is The Dog Ate It.

I second (fifth?) the vote for an electronic wallet program. This isn't a student-specific thing, but something every PDA owner should have. There are lots of options, including eWallet, SPB Wallet, CodeWallet, FlexWallet, SplashID, and the free Keepass.
