Opera Mobile freezing

G'Day all,

Is it just me or do other people experience frequent 'locking up' of opera mobile ranging from 5-10 seconds whilst surfing? The device ceases to respond during these brief interludes however if I continue tapping on the software keyboard whilst it's locked up, the program does remember the keystrokes that I've made and will enter them in quick succession when it unlocks itself. Don't get me wrong, I really, really like Opera mobile and it beats the snot out of PIE, it's just these lock ups are driving me crazy! I've tried increasing the cache size with no effect. Am I the only one with this problem? I'm using 8.65 beta on an x51v....

Thanks!

I've found two options to reduce/eliminate the freezes. You can use:
A) the Mortscript "Ramdisk" solution (run a search for it-I can't remember it off the top of my head). PRO:incredible speed advance over normal. CON:takes a huge chunk of RAM; I can't open up multiple tabs with Flash objects on my 64MB X51V.
B) opera.ini editing. I went into /application data/opera/opera.ini and changed my cache size to be as small as possible (1 kb)-you can't make it that small by using the "History"setting within Opera, I don't think. The freezes you're experiencing are caused by the system trying to copy data from the cache to RAM, so this makes Opera keep almost no data cached. PRO: uses no more RAM than normal, and no messing with Mortscript (although you do have to mess with opera.ini, so it's about even). CON: still not as fast as using a Ramdisk (I still get the pause problem a little, but it's a lot better than using the stock cache settings), uses wi-fi a lot more (if you use the back and forward buttons a lot).
If you've got cash you can part with, get the PPCTechs 128 MB upgrade and use Mortscript for the best performance. Otherwise, just reduce the cache size and accept the infrequent pauses that'll still happen. I find Opera to be perfectly usable with the 1kb cache.

Hey thanks for the reply oldx5advanced - very informative.

I remember reading something about the ramdisk option on this site about a year ago however never tried it to deal specifically with the opera mobile problem. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who's experiencing these problems. Just curious why pocket internet explorer doesn't have any such issues (apart from sucking as a browser on a VGA device....)...

I'm going to try your 'editing the the ini first' and see how I make out.

Thanks again
