I live in Japan and am planning a trip throough Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos in Feb.
I would like to take my Axim x51v and use GPS, but I have no idea what hardware/software would be ideal for this
Can anyone recommend the best gear/ware for finding my way around in these locales?

Also, I may be away from regular power supplies so, any recommendations for solar battery chargers?

Asian maps are hard to find. I just came back from Japan and the best software I got was gps tuner. Basically it's jsut a GPS software tracker. It doesn't have maps or anything but if you save the POI you can have a general direction of where to go.

If you do find some english maps for these Asian countries let me know cos I'm very interested :)

Yeah, I have been looking at gps tuner and that seems to be the way to go.
Looks like I may have a few nights of scanning and copy/paste from google earth ahead of me...

What reciever do you use?

I've got a sirf III blue tooth receiver. It uses a mobile phone battery although it does run out pretty quick....but it's cheap though. about $30AUD. Any Sirf III is good.
