While we all know (or a lot of us do) about the coding side, we're a lot less familiur with the aditional problems that occur when your doing it on a commercial basis...

Resource issues, personnel scheduling, competitive advantage, cashflow are all problems I don't have to deal with when coding at home...

@Stevenator65,

These are very good points, most of the changes requested somebody like WebIS' Alex or Shadow's Jeff would implement in a couple of months, based on my experience. Now, perhaps the underlying code of ListPro is vastly more complicated than either PocketInformant or ShadowPlan, and any change requires much more work - orders of magnitude - this I don't know.

Quote:
I have never experienced bugs in their software.
Their being WebIS. I wonder if we're on the same planet. I have bought 3 titles from them and 2 were buggy to the point of being useless. PI was very good most of the time, but there were, indeed, some small bugs. The latest release (2008) was, initially, very buggy - but within literally several weeks there were subsequent releases that took care of most issues. Alex had also incorporated several requested features, in the same time span. So, bug-less he isn't, but in the end (at least for PI) it works out well, and his release schedule is very fast.

As for ListPro - right now it works for me, but I am not sure about it being a long-term solution, based on the pace of development.

BTW, I found two more rather annoying bugs:

- Non-English characters appear fine on the PDA but are garbled on the desktop. Looks like this happened in v5, was reported to iLium many times but never fixed.

- There's no way to change/assign Category value to many items at once. Not a bug but rather a feature limitation. This can be probably worked around by copying data to Excel, making a change there, and copying back - but this is not a perfect solution, especially if this has to be done often.

I doubt ListPro is much more complicated that these other apps. Perhaps somewhat due to an older code base, but in the end it's all about time allocation. We have X amount of time and we just can't do it all.

I agree. I really want to see us add multiple-item change options.

I hate to keep beating this seemingly dead horse but is this item on the Ilium blog a further delay to List Pro changes?

Although this announcement is new to the public, it's been part of our plans all along. I was taking this into account with all the posts I placed here.

The "poor orphan" tag is not exactly untrue if after all the explanations and protestations, potential users still need not "hold their breath".

Well, seven months to a day since the thread was started, there's nothing - not even a single bug fix.

Abandonware, anyone ? :)

After reading the replies by the Listpro rep, I read between the lines. No big new releases any time in the near future.

Might want to check out the new Beta of Bonsai for Windows Mobile which is just now available for review:

Natara User Forums - Bonsai for Windows Mobile Beta (v4.2.7)

Thanks. I'll give Bonsai a try.

I don't consider most of the features asked for "big". Especially fixing bugs that didn't exist in v4 but got introduced in v5.

I'm using HandyShopper since Chris has been updating it on a regular basis in the last few months with more improvements and updates planned in the near future. I absolutely love it and it's FREE! It beats any list program I tried (for my needs anyway).

I don't think Bonsai is great just yet, but Palm users sure love it. Hopefully when it comes out of Beta, it will be a serious rival.

I do not think so.

I hear you when you say you have issues to report and bugs that are going unfixed, but really, there are a number of us that are not having problems and are satified with the product as is.

While I still remember with longing the capabilities of ThinkDB/ThinkDB2/SmartListToGo from the Palm platform, I have not found a replacement on the PPC platform that comes as close as ListPro.

If you do not need a desktop component, or sync capability, I suggest that you try SmartListToGo under StyleTap.

If you have found a better program, I suggest you state what that solution might be and let the rest of us in on the secret.

When I find it I surely will.

I am not speaking for the majority of users, just for myself. To me it _IS_ abandonware.

I still use it. This is a testament as much to the sorry state of useful outliner software on WM side, as to the value of ListPro itself. As good as it is it's nowhere near where Shadow Plan was 6 years ago. Now I got to the point where some bugs in current LP make it almost useless for at least one project I am working on. If I can't maintain ALL lists in it I may as well be looking for a substitute now, before I am forced to. Bonsai seems very promising.

Listpro is a good application, but it is not a great application in my opinion. Ilium's neglect of this application by shifting its focus away from Listpro to other applications disturbs me. I am willing to move to a different application that may not be great, but where the developer is actively working to improve it.

The combination of things that I don't like about Listpro that annoy me every time I use it, along with Ilium's cavalier attitude towards its existing customers and its lack of expediency about updating Listpro makes me willing to seriously evaluate other applications.

The developer of Listpro needs some competition to rattle its branches. I for one will be actively evaluating other applications.
