Icon14 Pocket Informant 8

Just a heads up that Handango sent out an email announcing the release of Pocket Informant 8.
Here is the hyperlink:

Pocket Informant 8 - Major New Release! by WebIS, Inc. - Handango Pocket PC Software

I have not had the time to install it yet, but I am anticipating a great program becoming even greater!

Newsflash: Wait For Offical Release!

SORRY ALL

I just heard from WebIS that the Handango version has some glitches and Alex asks for users to wait a day for an "offical release"

Check the Forums at WebIS under Alex's Blog for more information

Anyone tried the PI 2008?
How's the speed when pulling the calender info?
PI2007 was slow when pulling calender info. (I have info all the way since 2001).
Pocket Breeze or the default Window Outlook is faster than PI2007.

Yup. The PocketInformant web site isn't showing the 2008 version yet...

I'm pissed!! I just paid for the upgrade at Handango and downloaded it... The exe doesn't work right and version 2007 keeps being reinstalled. I believe the executible isn't version 8 but 2007 rev 893. I just uninstalled and re installed twice... and yes I found the webis website not to have 8 on the list... I feel ripped off....

The WORKING version is supposed to be available a little later today at the WEBIS website. I would download that one as a trial and then punch in the Handango registration key that you got. I'm waiting as well.

Thanks.... I'm less angry now and reinstalled ver 2007 for the day... I read the webIs forums and it appears Hndango jumped the gun and their version somehow got corrupted... They should take steps to say this to their customers. This is the second time in as many weeks that I have been screwed by handango... they are so off my list after today... I look forward to the new version....

Tried to install

I too tried to install 8 with no luck. It appears that the executable contained cabs for WM2003 and smartphone, but not WM 5. Luckily, it didn't get far enough to uninstall 2007. What a pain! But then again, the upgrade was only $14.41 with the 15% January discount!

The Fixed version is up and it works! Its posted in Alex's forum on the WebIs website. Go Download it... it is the unofficial release but it works. Alex says this is the first version in exe that covers all the mobile operating systems and it wasn't tested with everything.... try it...

The corrected version is available here (see the link under the "Mike393" note). From what I've read it will be added officially to the site later.

No toolbar and they aren't going to have it anymore. To switch between views (Agenda, Month, Todo etc) now one has to click a soft button, wait for the new screen to load (a flashy graphical pop up menu with finger-sized icons for each view) and select the right icon. There's a slight delay between screen tap and pop-up menu load on my machine, and switching views takes about 2 sec altogether vs instantaneous in PI2007. The icons for changing graphical view representation, selecting a custom view or other commands (the "globe" icon) are also gone, so doing all these actions takes more time, too (an extra tap + having to remember where the right command is hiding in the text menu tree). I didn't see any significant improvement in the time it takes to load PI. Overall, in my opinion using this version is slower and more annoying. Uninstalled it after just 20 min. This release will probably make smartphone users happy but I am really disappointed. Seems that Developer One's idea of keeping the PDA and phone versions somewhat separate works better for PDA users. Of course time will show how many of us remain in 3-4 years, though I hope there'll be more converged devices with a stylus coming to the market. Perhaps there will be new features added to PI down the line that would make me want to upgrade but the speed and ease of use just got worse and will likely stay that way. Just my 2 cents.

I'll have to demo this when I see a cab for Wm5 and above. I havn't checked, but there is really no rush.

By the way: smart marketing tactics, very smart. You just made your already huge customer base gihugeos!

I have to agree. I can't say that it is slower showing the Agenda and Calendar views from PI 2007, but PI 2007 was slow so there isn't any improvement here.

Now, PI prompts for each digit when entering calendar time. They tried to be clever in only showing the numbers that are applicable for each part of the time (i.e. 1 thru 12 for the hours, 0 thru 5 for the tenths of a minute and 0 thru 9 for the units of a minute prompt). Unfortunately, they change the button size for each of these prompts (ie the position for the 1 on the hours becomes the 0 on the tenths of a minute minutes and may be 0 or 3 on the units of a minute prompt depending on when on the screen you touch) so that you can't quickly tap the same part of the screen for each number. And it is slow so you have to watch each digit prompt to make sure you are tapping on the right part of the screen. VERY POOR USER INTERFACE!!!

Not sure if I can go back to the previous date/time prompt in PI 2008. If not, I will go back to PI 2007...
