MS Reader Problem

I have successfully downloaded and opened ebooks purchased from Barnes and Noble but the second batch I got gave me trouble. I have downloaded the books but cannot open them. I have the problem on both my desktop and my Axim. I know this problem has been addressed in other threads and that is not what I am specifically posting about. In the process of troubleshooting this problem, when I tried to reactivate my Axim, the MS Reader website gave me the error message that my version of PPC was too old. I am using PPC 2002 so I shouldn't be getting this message. I tried to wander throught the MS "support" site but gave up. Any ideas what this is about?

Can you be more specific about your problem. What does MS Reader say when you try to open your books? Are you only having problems opening specific books?

Open MS Reader, go to settings, then go to the third page. It should tell you there.

I was amazed that the 2003 upgrade did not have the most current version of Reader. I had to install 2.2.2 to get a lot of my books to open...

You wouldn't have the most recent version because MS Reader was updated AFTER 2003 was released. That's why you need to upgrade it.

Thanks all for your suggestions. The problem appears to be in the encryption of specific books. I suspected this after a few hours of troubleshooting (with the help of this board). I don't know if the problem is specific to the purveyor or the book. Barnes and Noble seems to be trying to fix it after many emails. Will report.

A little off topic, but still disturbing to me:

I upgraded to WM2003 and re-installed msreader (REV. 2.2.2 Build 3143)

The problem I've discovered is that I've lost the ability to access ALL the freebie titles that MS was promoting during the "summer giveaway promotion".

I reactivated with a new passport account (because I've changed providers), and now all the great books I was downloading and saving can't be accessed.

MS's troubleshooting guide suggests to download the books again. Unfortunately, MS only posts the books for a week at a time, so the library I thought I was building for future reading is now just wasted space on my disks.

Oh well, I guess you get what you don't pay for.
