Application that can restrict program access on Axim?

Hey all,

I am helping out at school with a project that involves the use of Axim x51's (woot) with children and parents. However, as the Axims will only be loaned out for a week or so for data collection purposes through a single program, I was curious if anyone knew of an application that could allow me ("the administrator") to deny access to any other program (like Internet Explorer Mobile) or system function (Add/Remove Programs, changing the device name or password, even hard resetting) that I see fit. This would obviously be so that the units (and data collected on them) would not get borked over the course of the loan.

Ideally I would obviously like to use freeware (loaning out 10-15 Axims total), but I'm guessing this isn't too common a feature needed on PDAs so I am interested in $$$ applications as well. They would also have to work on WM5 of course since that's what the x51 runs. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can never protect against a hard reset. The best thign to do maybe to just make an entire in the startup folder, to make sure that you program is launched. Then just hide any close buttons, and make the program fullscreen.

I'll try those out, thanks. Anyone else have suggestions or a vote?

Basically, what you would have to do is hide/replace the shell with a very minimal front end.

I really can't think of a minimal shell/limited app launcher, and once again nothing would last through a hard reset.

If you REALLY needed something like this long term, I'd check over to XDA devs to see if someone who knew what they were doing could make you a custom ROM with most everything gutted out, except for the features/apps you need.

edit... I suppose that it wouldn't be too difficult for a programmer to make a few "virus" like apps... One that would be your shell replacement, and another that would keep it running and terminate any app not allowed. I suppose that you might need another to to keep the second one running

If there was only ONE app that could run, it might not be too difficult to make a startup script that would execute the app and then stay resident to 1) keep the app in the foreground 2) start it again if it closed 3) provide some ability to ask for a password to close it so the admin can get to the shell... Perhaps a monitoring of the stoarge card (if a specific file exists on an inserted storage card, close the app)

It MIGHT be possible to do this in MortScript, but I'd think that it would be real difficult to make it bulletproof...
