Wow, this generated a flurry of responses, didn't it.
Well, here's where I got so far:
1. SOTI Pocket Controller can be set it up to connect over TCP/IP if you check off "enable advanced network functionality" under "USB to PC" in Settings. Of course then Axim won't connect to Active Sync; if you still want to be able to use AS you have to establish a relationship before enabling A.N.F.
Then, I could use Sync Manager in SOTI. However, there are two problems with it.
First, if your files are on the network share that's not mounted when you sync, SOTI simply deletes them from PDA with no warning. Along with directory. Oops. I contacted them and they said, yes, this is a bug, we'll fix it in one of the future versions... which you would have to pay an upgrade price for...
Second, while it syncs, Pocket Controller can't be accessed.
So, I had re-installed AS, set up a relationship with nothing in it, and am using MobSync to sync files. It doesn't delete files on PDA if it can't find the directory on PC; it syncs in the background; and it allows to set up a Recycler directory on PDA.
2) With TCP/IP connection, the speed is so good that I really don't miss Outlook. I can just access my PDA on laptop via either Pocket Controller or My Mobiler. I am amazed how far My Mobiler progressed in the last few months. I paid $35 for PoCo less than a year ago and back then MM was just too kinky, slow and buggy - now it's just about as fast and easy to use (and free !), kudos to developer.
3) To make sure I have a backup on PC, I use PIMBackup (freeware) and sync backups to PC with MobSync. Again, I chose a freeware over a paid for copy of SPB Backup that I already own - because it's plain better for what I need (lately, this seems to be the trend).
Now the only thing I am still missing is the ability to print / export a detailed list of my contacts with addresses, phone #s etc. This is a sorely missing feature that neither PI nor AF are providing. (If I am wrong please correct me !)
