XScaleCtrl for Dell Axim by wibble-wobble.com

"XScaleCtrl for Dell Axim is a Control Panel applet that allows you to adjust the speed of the XScale Processor in the Dell Axim from 100MHz up to 500MHz.

The 300MHz Dell Axim can be scaled up to 400MHz
The 400MHz Dell Axim can be scaled up to 500Mhz."

Ooh, I am definitely going to try this out this weekend ^_^ .

Remember to back up first just to be on the safe side!

Words on the street: from 300MHz to 400MHz movies run smoother. Attempt to scale from 300MHz to 500MHz locks up the system.

I have a 400MHz. Will attempt to overclock to 500MHz once I get my dirty little hands on the app.

I used PocketHackMaster to move my 400 to 497.5 and it worked well. PHM has many more things you can adjust, and consequently many more ways to lock up the Ax pretty hard, so it's not for the faint of heart. However, for those who want to try, my Ax 400 moved to 497.5 with settings of 27, 2, 2.5 (You have to get the product to understand the settings, or read the thread at Brighthand.com that is now over 170 pages long.)

Pockethackmaster.com

is the web site, but there is more on Brighthand.com.

Jake,

What kind of real-world performance increase did you see @ 497.5 MHz (compared to 400 MHz)? Do you use PocketTV...if so, what fps benefit (on "difficult" videos) did you see? Did you compare performance of both 500 MHz modes (27,2,2.5 & 27,5,1)?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'd definitely like to close the PocketTV performance gap between my Axim and my 'old' SA-powered HP 568!

My perception was that the 27,2,2.5 was definitely quicker than 400. I didn't try any videos, because I don't use my Ax for that, but it was stable. I'm not sure 27,5,1 would be stable, and I don't want to hang up and force a hard reset. What I really liked about Hackmaster was the ability to throttle back to 100. I do use my Ax to read ebooks, which is a non-cpu intensive activity, so throttling back to 100 should extend the battery life even more.

Because I only want to change speeds when I want to, I don't have Hackmaster registered to startup, nor do I make the changes "sticky." When I want it, I start it, set the speed and minimize it. I'm waiting for Anton to implement vCore changes to decide whether to try that or not.

You might scan the entire brighthand thread for video implications. The PocketTV Team has been making comments throughout, some in the early days were pretty caustic. Lately it's gotten better as Anton has perfected the software.

I just read an article a little bit ago about this one. I'm really impressed that this is tailored specifically to the Axim unit - not just XScale.

I think companies are starting to realize just how important the Axim is, and how much market share Dell has with PDAs now...

Jake,

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I understand that many Axim users aren't going to be interested in overclocking; for me, my desire to 'clock-change' starts and ends with PocketTV...for everything else, I'm completely happy leaving things as they are.

I'd plowed thru much of the Brighthand thread you mentioned, but very little of it was related to operation @ 500 MHz. Most of the posters had PPCs that would run @ 472 MHz, which (at least at this point) is of no interest to Axim owners; we can only hope that vCore developments will change that in the future. Anyway, the few comments from Axim users I've seen prior to your post ranged from "I didn't see any change" to "I thought it was a little better." Hopefully, over the next few weeks we'll get a clearer picture of just how useful all these under/over clocking apps really are to us.

OK, didn't download it until this morning. I have a 400 MHz and use XScaleCtrl to overclock the processor speed to 500MHz.

It didn't crash my Axim :) .

Faster? Yes. Movie runs smoother for sure. Still a bit choppy. All apps runs faster. Significant difference, no. For less $4, I have no complain.

No smoke coming from my beautiful Axim. So go ahead a give it a try.

I have a 300 mhz axim and I have been using the free turbo tray 498 software to run it at 498mhz for about a week now without difficulty and the difference is amazing. The most perceptible difference for me is in pocketSnes which went from virtually unplayable to real time speeds. I haven't tried any of the other overclocking software, but right now this one is doing more than I expected possible. (and its free!)

Incase no one knows, here's the link to find turbo tray 498. There are two other versions of turbo tray as well.
