Launchers & Plugins

Call me an idiot, but I just understood/ realized something.
A plugin puts information that resides in some other program on the today screen.
A launcher puts the icon on the screen so you dont have to dig around through the machine to get to it.
The skining program lets you customize the way all those icons and info look on the today screen.
So what else can l do on the today screen?

congradulations on your enlightenment!!

im a HUGE fan of wisbar desktop (requires wisbar advance).

in which case, you can put anything on your today screen. pictures, buttons, shortcuts, today items, quick access phone numbers, and the sky is the limit.

ive used everything out there, and this is BY FAR the best way to customize your device, with the smallest memory footprint...

takes some learning and time, but check out the forums @ lakeridgesoftware.com

I really do feel enlightened, let me ask you this.

1) If I get Wisbar and WAD I can get rid of iluancher and snoopsoft dashboard and sk menu and sk today commander and sk shortcut manager and pshutxp
and all that jazz and have a smaller memory footprint and cpu usage?

something else i was goig to ask and now i cant think of it

well, yes. in short.

most or all of the functionality of the listed programs which you use can be replicated or replaced with wa and wad.

ive tried and used them all, and this is by far the best and most configurable setup ever.

ive found that device performance is dictated by the delicate placement of files and executables during and after an install. this is the key to a sound and speedy device, and ultimately a device that is functional and as usefull as possible (at least from the today screen).

for example, im using an ipaq 6515, which dosnt allow for much in the way of performance when youre skinning and customizing the today screen. where as the eten m600, or the hx5555 i have, offer much more in the way of internal starage, so you can be a little more sloppy about file clutter.

i highly recommend reading the pocketpc magazine blog section of expert Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen... theres no other place to get this level of information about the method of installing programs, and what to do with files after an install (sorry, my english is poor).

to get my device running at top performance, i install anything i can to the sd card (i would also recommend reading up on formatting an sd card for performance at the anton tomov website(pocket mechanic)).

right now, wisbar is installed to internal storage, wad is installed to the sd card, all skins are installed to the sd card. some programs have to be installed to internal storage, like pocket informant. i also install sbsh pocketbreeze to internal storage.

that makes up for all the maiin programs i install to the internal storage. above and beyond that, everything goes on the sd card. pocket weather, weatherpanel, sktools, etc etc etc... i can get more specific if you want.

i then remove any files i can, if possible, per the ideas from Menneisyys blogs.
this greatly increases the performace and stability of the device.

Everything on my 4705 is on the SD card and every thing in my MDA is on the SD card.
So Wisbar needs to be internal for best performance? Could I install it to file store? I tend to surf a lot on my Ipaq and the IE cache tends to eat up a lot of space and I tend to use Novii Remote when I am to lazy to find it or I am surfing and it eats up memory.
Now this could turn out to be really cool... Do the wisbar thing and the put basic channel surfing controls in the system tray so that you could surf and change channels from the same screen.
That would be the bomb

I will read his blog on Formatting and such and research that over the holiday. It's almost thanksgiving here in america, and I will need something to play with while I am being polite to my in-laws and gobbling up all their food :)

i have found this to be the case. alternatively you could install it to the file store. the point being, fast load times as its controlling the key elements of the functionality of your device, and has to draw and cache information... works way better from internal storage than external media. try both ways to test if you want, youll see.

that sounds like a good idea with the novi remote. you should post some today screens when youre done :)

the pocketmechanic formatting of the sd card isnt crucial, however, any way you can bump performance is a plus. it takes a good part of the day to benchmark after formatting each time to find the best settings for your card/device... interesting read either way.
