to start, when and if you install wisbar advance, initially, you should set it not to start after a device reset. at least untill the device has been tested and is stable.
this is where i think you had a lock up issue? also, should you get stuck, you can always "exit" out of wisbar, even when its loading (via the task menu item in the middle of the menu bar usually), so that you can make the appropriate changes to the settings and so on.
there is a lot of trial and error with wisbar, but the end result is better than anything else out there... hands down.
im not sure what you meant by "you didnt have a close button", or x button or whatever. if youre running a program, you should see an x (or depending on the skin youre using it could be anything, like a colured shape or anything really) which will close or minimize the application (depending on the setting you specify within wisbar settings). close means close, or you can set it to minimize by default.
second... youre asking about two completely different things. wisbar has nothing to do with sbsh or spb. i wouldnt reccomend using wisbar with spb pocket plus. you probably know that allready tho.
in my experience and extensive use of everything to which you have referred, ive found that spb products tend to be very resource dependent (specifically pocketplus), and they install a lot of items to the main memory, no matter where you tell activestink to install it. ilauncher is a great launcher program, and is less of a memory hog and dosnt "take over the device" like pocketplus. i however, dont use launcher programs anymore, simply because ive found the same, but better functionality out of wad with its virtual pages.
sbsh pocketbreeze dosnt have any competition, so theres really no question there. dont even condsider an spb "equivalent." pocket weather is among the best weather today plugins available, second to marswares weatherpanel (i use both), i use webis money for financial related things, but again were talking about totally different things unrelated to the problems you were having. spb has a decent financial program i think. and yes they have a user community.
Spb Club :: Index
i encourage you to completely read the wad instractions before you start using it. i usually "remove" the items on the today screen that it puts there by default (battery, owner name etc). and its very important that you disable any today items you may have turned on in \start\settings\personal\today. otherwise your device will be slow and youll cripple the functionality of wad.
the best place to go is the forums over at lakeridge and sbsh. its the place to exchange skins and themes, or get information regarding performance or just answers to general questions
hope that helps

... i feel like i should add.
launchers, such as spb pocket plus or sbsh ilauncher are great if you dont have much in the way of today plugins and lots of stuff running constantly. so if im setting up a device with very minimal things in the way of today plugins i see no problem with a launcher type today suite with all the functionality that comes along with them. if youre like me, however, and you have tons of things you want access to from the today screen, the launcher programs wont cut it. thats why im so big on the lakeridge products. how they integrate not only shortcuts to exes and documents, settings, and so on; but the way you can integrate today plugins and mix in things like sbsh pocketbreeze, you have a very functional today screen and easy access to everything...
...oh, and i never really understood those clock programs, at least why someone would want to pay for one(personally got the license via rewards through spb)? theres the screensaver aspect of it, i guess. i just personally think theyre a waste of space (and $15usd!!!)...
