before an install, i guess you would want to format your sd card if you havnt allready, to the best performing setup (with pocketmechanic or sktools or something)... then install software, then tweak the system, then break it again :)
with a brand new device and sd card... after benchmarking and formating the sd card, i install all the software im going to use with the device, register all of it, then run sktools to change the cache locations/temp locations, and msg file locations to my sd card.
then i get rid of all the help files, run upxppc on a few dlls, and delete anything i dont need (like demo pictures that came with spb imageer, or the jvlite demo that comes with netfront)
after everything is installed, configured, and tweaked, i run sktools and "tweak" for stability or memory (depending on the device and its memory), then i run optimize registry (on wm5 devices) to complete the who install.
then BACKUP. save a backup to your sd card and to your pc.
then i usually do something like i did the other day (without an up to date backup) where i was testing kaspersky antivirus and encryption on my 240x240 6945. i installed it and found that it didnt play nice on a 240x240 device :( so i did what i usually do, and i installed nyditot vd, and then my 6945 wouldnt boot :(
after a hard reset, and some full, closed fist connections with the closest hard surface, i got everything back to what it should be.
it usually dosnt take me too long anymore to install and configure everything. maybe a good 3-4 hours (not sequential). maybe a bit more.
hope this helps... its just kind of a reiteration of a post i made a while back, but i guess it still applies :)
good luck, and just let me know if you have questions
John
