How to completely remove mail data?

I no longer want to sync email with my Axim X5. I've de-selected Email in ActiveSync on my PC. Mail no longer synchronizes with my PPC; however, the original messages still appear in the Inbox. When I attempt to delete a message within the Inbox applet, nothing happens; it remains in the Inbox. When I attempt to open the messages within the Inbox applet, nothing happens. I've tried this with quite a few of the messages, BTW.

Ending the Inbox in Running Programs didn't help, nor did rebooting.

There were many small files in the \My Device\Windows\messaging folder--presumably, one file for each message. I deleted this folder, but it came right back the next time I started the Inbox applet. The small files did not re-appear, however.

My Axim is finding pointers to these messages *somewhere*; but where? How can I remove this data?

Are trying to "select and hold" the stylus on the file name and then selecting delete from the pop-up window? That's the only way I know of getting rid of them. Maybe you somehow deleted them already and now its getting confused by an invalid path? Hopefully some smart guy knows what else to do. Good luck

Yeah, I tried selecting and holding all of the messages as a group, then selecting Delete from the pop-up window; nothing happens. I also tried this with individual messages.

The list is displaying the normal message headers--including sender names, dates, sizes, and subjects. If I deleted them (as I believe I have), then where is it getting all of this information from?

In ActiveSync, keep the Inbox checked and then go to Settings. There you'll uncheck the Inbox and folders that you no longer want to sync. At the next synchronization, the emails will be deleted from the Axim.
After that is done, you can unselect the Inbox from the main AS screen.

I kept the Inbox checked in ActiveSync > Options, but under the Settings for Inbox, there is no checkbox for Inbox, per se--just checkboxes for folders underneath Inbox.

With Inbox checked at the ActiveSync > Options level, at the next synchronization, the current messages in my Outlook Inbox were synchronized to my PPC. The original offending messages remained--even though they no longer exist in Outlook. Bad sign.

Anyway, I unchecked Inbox at the ActiveSync > Options level and sync'd again. This time, the current messages were removed from my PPC; however, the original offending messages (all from May 2003 and earlier, BTW) remained.

When both the current and old messages were on my PPC, I noticed one difference between the two: Every current message had an envelope icon, whereas every old message had no icon whatsoever.

I've had this happen before when I've done a backup/restore without doing a hard reset 1st. That's why I normally remove email from the axim b4 doing a backup and re-sync after, doing this wireless is rather quick and may prevent problems later.

Interesting; thanks. I don't recall doing a backup/restore since acquiring the device in April; but that doesn't mean I didn't do one. ;)

Any suggestions on how to proceed? Do a backup, hard reset, then a restore? I'm not convinced that this Inbox corruption won't return with the restore.

If the mail is just on the Axim, and is mail you no longer want, then you can delete them manually from the \Windows\Messaging folder.
Quick way is to explore through ActiveSync, browse to the folder, highlight everything and delete.

Thanks. I'm away from my docking station at the moment and am therefore limited to using just the Axim directly.

The \Windows\Messaging folder contained 83 items, all dated 12/30/2003--presumably corresponding to the messages that were sync'd (and subsequently un-sync'd) yesterday. I ended the Inbox program, then deleted the items from the folder. The \Windows\Messaging folder is now empty, other than an empty 'attachments' folder. However, the old messages are still present in my Inbox--again, with no mail icons.

I can try this from ActiveSync tonight, but I don't expect the results to be different.

Still not able to delete the items from the PPC Inbox--even via ActiveSync > Explore. The \Windows\messaging folder is empty.

While using the ActiveSync > Explore interface, I noticed a Databases system folder. There are a number of items in this folder with a date stamp about the time I did my last sync:

fldr 100136a - 256KB
fldr 100136d - 8.02KB
MailActiveSync - 30.8KB
pmailFolders - 26.4KB
pmailMsgs - 327KB
Status Store - 480 bytes
DB_notify_queue - 5.25KB

Unfortunately, the Expore interface does not allow me to do anything with these files other than view their properties; I can't delete any of them.

I suspect that these "ghost message headers" are contained in one or more of these files.
