Exclamation Microsoft Reader Is to BIG!!!

I was reinstalling microsoft reader 2.2.2 again last night after a hard reset and finally relized that "this is not being written to the ROM" and 2.2 MB is real space consuming when you don't use it that much. I understand that if I don't have it I will not be able to read a .lit above DRM-3 (ithink that is the level)
My question to the Axim community is which reader Proggie do you use and does it kick Microsft reader into the dirt. (please say why) after I get some of the more popular choices i will try and put a poll up and we will all see how Reader stands up to the plethora of reader programs out there.
Also if your reader of choice will be able to access the .lit format that would be awesome to huh??

As far as I know, MSReader is the only Reader that will read .lit formats.

I just use MSReader.

I've tried them all

Despite the frustrations I have had with MS Reader I still find it better fro "Me" than any other program. We, on this site, have argued and presented our cases to each other for a multitude of other readers, and I have tried them all and keep coming back to MS Reader.

Its really a matter of individual choice.

I also curently have installed Adobe reader and find that between the two I can read every thing that I am interested in.

Tiny eBook Reader version 2.0 is supposed to read "unlocked or unencrypted LIT format eBooks". It won't read your DRM-locked ebooks, but at $12.00 US, you might give it a try. There are tons of unlocked, public-domain LIT ebooks at Blackmask.

I use MSReader but have it installed on my SD card with my ebooks. I have not found this to be a problem.

New Version of MSReader Available

I followed your lead and installed the new version (2.2.3) of MSReader http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp in my SD Card. This new version solves the problem that prevented users from reading MS Reader e-books from some Web sites. With it installed in my SD Card, I notice a new problem. Running the Reader with my Symbol Wi-Fi CF card inserted freezes my Axim X5. Soft reset. I guess city hall is telling me to do my readings not my surfing! Calling SK Remover. Uninstalled and re-installed the thing. This time to the default directory not SD Card. No more frozen Axim. I could read "Dolorous Passion" while surfing the net. I later realized yours is a stupid idea (in my case), since my MSReader (v2.2.1) is already pre-installed by Dell in ROM. I wouldn't save memory by installing the new version in my SD Card. There was little or no change in my memory usage after the over ROM installation.

There must be a moral to all of these

Thank you for the news about MS Reader 2.2.3. I think that this should be the subject of a new thread which I will post.

Although the Ms Reader setup.exe file is 2.2 MB this includes both the the PDA and the Desktop versions. The PDA file size is 1.01 MB

Um no i belive your wrong there. the desktop version is seperate from the PPC version and the whole 2.2 mb goes to the memory of the PPC. I will double check this but the reader installer i have only installs on the PPC and I have a seperate installer for the desktop

yep all 2.2 megs of it go right into the RAM not the ROM like a previous poster said and doesn't include the desktop reader either. So like I stated to Start this thread...
Microsoft Reader Is TOO BIG!!!
but what does the average joe do about it was what I wanted to know. Do you use a different reader or did you just stay with MS Reader?
There has too be options that others took....Bill cannot be the "ONE" in every facet of this industry

Many other members like other readers. UBook is one that comes to mind. However, I have a lot of books in .lit format and decided that if I was going to have to install a seperate reader anyway, I may was well stay with MS.

I'm fully aware that the new version doesn't install in ROM, it installs "...a RAM version of the program with your ROM version." I guess it's my fault for describing it as "over ROM installation." That's what it is! It installs a RAM version over my ROM pre-installed MS Reader. I must admit though that I was wrong to say there was little or no change in my memory usage after installing in the default (\Windows) folder.

The installation doesn't overwrite the 25 files already pre-installed in ROM. These files are "replaced" by 25 new ones in RAM. After the install, you could no longer see those ROM files, but they're still there in ROM. Try deleting MsReader.exe (RAM version). Gone, right! Do a soft-reset. MsReader.exe (ROM) is ressurected! Run MS Reader, check the version--you're back to the old (ROM) version--v2.2.1 in my case.

v2.2.1 v.2.2.3
Prog MEM 6.8 MB 6.8 MB
Stor MEM 6.5 MB 8.3 MB

I was wrong! There is a 1.8 MB overhead with the new version. Microsoft Reader Is to BIG!!! Installing it in SD Card has no tax on your Program/Storage MEMs. The only trade off is loose 2.5 MB of space in your SD Card (the new version over-head), surely something gotta add up!

I settled for the default \Windows installation and managed to reduced the Storage MEM (RAM) overhead to 0.7 MB. I only installed the following four files instead of 25:

MsReader.exe
DASShp.dll
ebookfx-dll
msls31.dll

I was warned by CABINSTL that MS Reader might not work. So far so good. It's working. I have my cake and eating it too!
