TV Remote Software for Dell Axim

Hello! I am new to this site and hopefully I am doing this right.

I just received my new Axim 400MGZ in the mail today and I love it. However, I have attempted to install TV Remote 3.1 software and it does not seem to work. Is there a Television Remote Control software App for the Axim that I am unaware of? I would love to be able to use my Axim as a Universal Remote in this way.

Thanks.

The IR on the Axim is about the worst I have seen in handhelds. I wouldn't both too much with it.

Contact the folks at Griffin Technology about TotalRemote. They include an IR booster that goes in the headphone jack of the PPC. They currently do not have the Axim as a supported device, but you can check with them to see if/when they will.

I received this response from Griffin

Quote:
Unfortunately because of the way the audio jack functions on the Dell Axim,
it is not capable of supporting our IR transmitter. It is possible that we
may produce other types of IR transmitters that do not connect to the audio
jack however it is still too early to tell. You might want to check back in
about 4-6 months and perhaps I will have more definite information by then.

I wonder what is different about our audio jack?

Peter,

I am also looking into using my Dell Axim as a universal remote. While I have no way to personally test this, as my Axim is still in the unopened box in my apartment, the following will work:

Head over to
PDAWin
and download (and eventually buy) TV Remote Controller 5.4

This version has support for the AXIM.

The next major problem, is to increase the IR range of the Axim. I just got an email confirmation from the maker of this part. While his site has not been updated yet, his card has been tested with the Axim.

PDA-IR

Good luck, and make sure to post your results!

Cory,

Just to let you know. I plan on purchasing the Axim-compatible card as soon as it is available on Dave's (EDV's) website. I have been running the PDAwin software since version 5.0 (i believe it was) with no problems at all on my Axim. I have used an external IR extender up until this point. If you search the boards here, you'll find some screenshots of my setup if you'd like a look at them. Anyhow, I'll keep you and everyone else posted when I receive my PDA-ir card in a couple weeks.

deftech-

Yep, I have seen the other posts regarding the use of TV Remote Controller, they have been quite useful! (and persuasive in my decision to keep my Axim).

My main reason for posting, was just to let people know that while the Dave's website hasn't yet been updated to say that the card is Axim compatiable, he was kind enough to email me to say that it Was and that the site would be updated (hopefully) this weekend.

I am quite excited to see how you and everyone else fairs!

cmcFilms,

Thanks a lot for posting the info though....until you mentioned it, I forgot to post it yesterday when I heard the news. I hope that with a few people on the boards here using this software and PDA-ir (when it ships), there will be many more cost-minded home-theater users that see the great benefits of Axim.

It's sub-standard. That's what it is. I read a lengthy thread on another forum (where one of the Griffin guys posted). The amplifier Dell builds-in is crap.
Initially, when the Axim came out, they thought it would be compatible. But they got complaints. So they tested a couple of Axims in December and realized that the output the amplifier produces is too much distorted and that they will never get it to work that way. All customers got their money back. And since the IR of the Axim is probably the weakest out there we will all have to wait for the Griffin CF card.

Yes, the UltraMote CF extender DOES work with the Axim. However, it is only compatible with UltraMote's remote software....not with any other remote software (like PDAwin). Some people like the UltraMote software, but I personally don't like the interface. It's probably perfect for some users though.

ultramote

i use ultramote, with their extender. however, i will have to agree that the interface is pretty bad. however, they do allow you to import your own skins. I've made 4 pretty nice ones, for a TV, XBox, pioneer sound system, and VCR. If anyone would like them, just email me jayhocking@gbim.org and I can send them to you.

The only other complaint I have is that there are no device profiles included, you have to program it completely yourself. It's pretty easy, but still, it would be nice if there were some already in there.
