I'm doing what you're doing -- just starting out with the Mapolis program and the demo maps while I'm waiting for my GPS receiver to come in.
I downloaded the stuff from Mapolis, then I did an install to the default location (RAM). I figure I can always get fancier later on.
When I ran the Mapolis setup program, my Ax asked if I wanted to replace a DLL. I said "yes".
Then I used Active Synch / Explore to copy the demo maps from my PC to the "Program Files\Mapolis" directory.
Mapolis started without a glitch. So maybe something got corrupted in your Active Synch session, or maybe something went wrong with all the moving around. You might consider removing everything and trying again.
BTW - I spent a few hours on the Mapolis forum in gpspassion.com. (Don't get disharteaned by the French forums -- just scroll down for the English.) I learned a lot. Some people are loading the high-level street maps in the Mapolis directory, then storing maps of various states in different subdirectories. Mapolis will not load Navtech maps representing more than 20 Million people. Separating states allows users to turn on "load contiguous maps" and effectively load the entire state at one go. (Depending on the number of people in the state).
Also, I learned that maps are updated quarterly. The next update should be in mid-March. While you can download maps for an entire year, you can only download maps for the update version you purchased. So if you're not in a big hurry, it might pay to wait a couple of weeks before plunking down your $100. Or, you can buy the right to the updated maps for a reduced price.
Mostly, my recomendation is that time spent on gpspassion.com is well spent.
