What PPC are you trying to install to? Seems I read on the Sprite Page that there was one version for iPaqs and another version for all other PPCs. Something to do with it being incorporated into the OEM Versions of iPaqs.
So if you're trying to do a PPC Install to an iPaq (or vice-versa)......could be your problem. I don't see anywhere in your posts where you say your doing this on an Axim, but do see several references to iPaqs.

As for uninstalling the PPC version prior to installing this one; what for?
Well, for one thing, that's what the FAQ says to do for a PPC Install

Are you suggesting that the PPC has to be connected before I can install the package to the PC? That'd be odd. Well, okay, if that's possible I'll just try that with my iPAQ now.......
This is what makes me think you may be playing mix-n-match with a PPC Download into an iPaq. iPaqs are different with Sprite because they come already loaded in the ROM.

Even if I were so daft as to attempt to install the version for iPAQs (specifically those which have Sprite Backup included in ROM, labelled 'iPAQ Backup') into a Dell, how would that affect the PC-side of the install in such a way as I've reported, repeatedly? The installer initiates... a progress bar, well, progresses... and then I get this here error message right here:
I hit the Enter key on the PC, and the installer closes in another couple of seconds. Having some experience of the vagaries of PC-based PPC software installers, and being quite familiar with Sprite in particular having been responsible for bug-hunting a number of critical flaws in beta versions prior to the inclusion in ROM of a finished version, I was aware that the installer progress bar indicated unpacking of files to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder. So after the initial failure, I opened that temp folder and tried again. A set of folders appeared, and a couple of loose files, which I browsed. I found that one contained a couple of data1.cab, data2.cab type files, an INI, odds and ends, and a setup.exe file, so I copied this folder to the desktop and after OK-ing the error again tried launching this extracted setup file. The same graphics appeared, the same progress bar, and then the same error message. No PPC-launchable CAB files ever appeared in that nor any other location.
Just to be really, really clear about this:
- I have not tested this with the Dell which is my current main PPC, as I have a working Sprite Backup running on the X5 and do not really need the update. I have so far only uninstalled and tested with the iPAQ 3835, with it not connected and connected under Activesync as well.
- The iPAQ 3835 uses the same exact install package as the Dell X5, as that model of iPAQ does NOT contain the 'iPAQ Backup' program in ROM... They sent it to me from New Zealand to do extended testing of their software, prior to the release of the ROM version in later models of iPAQ... so it couldn't have the ROM version.
- I downloaded the preview release last week, and the full version 3.0 release version this week, both in full awareness of the difference between ROM-based Sprite Backup upgrade versions and the versions for other device models and makes.
So, now I'll stop repeating my information. Perhaps I shouldn't have started this thread in the first place. I'll just keep waiting for Sprite to reply to my email. I only wanted to install this latest Sprite Backup so that I would be well informed about new features, so as to be better able to answer people's questions about it in forums.

I, for one, am very happy that you know that you are not. However from all posts previous to your last, we did not know this for a fact.
Now that we know that you are the very model of a modern Major Sprite user, please close this thread properly when you get your reply from Sprite, with details of what was required to correct your problem.
Thangya...........
thangya vera much!

On their version history page it looks like there have been some reports of problems. It worked fine here but it seems that you are not the only one having a problem. Hopefully they will get back to you soon with a fix. http://www.spritesoftware.com/suppor...n_history.html
After using it for 24 hours, the only problem so far is that it seems slow when scanning the files. Haven't really figured ou t how to use the simple mode yet either. Can't see where to set the options for it other than selecting it. But no crashes yet.
I agree, takes a little longer to scan. I am sticking with normal mode, not easy mode. This way I can ensure my backup settings are preserved. Still works great!
Yeah, advance mode works very well with encryption. And the backups are amazingly fast (since i put most of my programs in Flash storage, the compressedbackup exe is like 7~8Mb in total size :) )
Very nice piece of software, I think I will buy it if no problem exists (lemme do some hard resets now :P )
Still no useful reply from Sprite. They sent me a little diagnostic EXE to run on the PC, but it give only an error: 'Expected more recent OS version. Please upgrade and run again.' Right. To get my latest version Sprite installer debugged, maybe, I'm to pay hundreds of dollars upgrading from Win98SE, and my RAM is only 192MB so I'd have to buy more of that... skip it. It works, I'll live without the latest Sprite Backup. Apparently Sprite is dumping Win98 users just like they dumped MIPS Casio users. My old EG-800 would be happier with self-extracting compressed backups, but the long-ago-promised update never came. *sniff*
Sprite no longer resembles in any way the Sprite I once knew. They have not helped me, and I suspect it's because they don't wish to support Win98SE.
On related themes; Last week my PC did something during a reboot that it has never done before. It had just finished running AVG boot scan, and then an odd blue window appeared fullscreen calling itself 'Windows Registry Checker.' I had no time to read on, as it soon re-rebooted, and when it had finished none of my user settings were intact. None. Folders and files were there, but my chosen options in dozens upon dozens of programs were all gone, along with most modified file associations (or all, I don't know yet), and just about everything modified over the past couple of years. I thought at first to do a full registry restore from a couple of months ago, but then decided to deal with it as problems arose and see just how messed up it was through experience. Rather messed up it turns out, but nothing fatal. And today I discovered that this registry wipe or whatever it was has enabled me to install the current version of Sprite Backup! So I have the CAB files and will stop whining for Sprite to send them to me. (Oddly, no one here offered to email them, did they? Seems one of the first things I generally think of when someone needs a CAB file...)
On another, less-related note; My old Casio EG-800 seems no longer relevant in terms of Sprite support nor anything else. The screen stopped responding yesterday. I tried a lot of button pressing and some messing about via Activesync, then hard reset to test if it was software at all. Nope, hardware problem of some kind. I'm stuck on the Align Screen. My step-daughter is rather dismayed, but as another EG-800 user has recently reported PocketPCTechs being about to mend a CF slot problem on his unit, I might sometime send this one their way for an assessment. Sprite not having a MIPS version seems rather likely to be irrelevant though, as this unit is more likely on the way to the graveyard. Sad, as it's the best PPC I've ever used, especially for graphics.
Anyway, this probably ends the road for this thread, in a sort of whimper, with silence from Sprite.
