I tried to install this last week, several times, but just kept getting errors: 'The previous installed version of Sprite Backup could not be determined. Installation will not continue.'
Something pretty much like that anyway... I've written to Sprite about it, but not yet got an answer. Funny thing is, I've always used Sprite Backup, since the earliest version was called 'Sprite:Lite' and I did a review for pocketnow. Sprite sent me an iPAQ 3835 to keep and test with, and also briefly a 3870, for the much later release of the ROM-integrated backup progam in the newer iPAQ models. It's always installed just great! But this one won't work at all.
I uninstalled it from the PC, trying again after that, and still no go. I cleaned out any references to Sprite Backup in my PC registry, but nope, still the same error. I'm thinkin' it's probably just my funky old PC being a brat about this, but has anyone else had a similar error?
Must be your old PC, today I removed my old version of Sprite Backup Premium from my PC and installed 3.0, no problems with installation, and am running off the SD card.

You have to uninstall your prior version, both from your PC (add/remove programs) and your PPC. It has to do with the updated installer file. Also, you use the same install file for premium or standard.
If you want to install standard, you check the sprite backup component and user manual components, and uncheck the rest.
Nah, that uninstall thing isn't the problem. Like I said, I have thoroughly uninstalled the application and any residual files and registry data from the PC, and tried to run this newer installer. Actually I downloaded the 7.somethingMB release version this afternoon, to try again after failing with last week's preview release. Same error message pops up during the first 5 seconds of running the new installer. It says exactly the following, then when I OK out of the error the installer shuts down as though nothing had happened.
Sprite Backup - Installshield Wizard
The installed version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate.
That's all I ever get. I just wrote a fresh email to Sprite, as my email server seems to have been behaving oddly at times lately and the former letter might have got lost. They've always been great in the past in terms of support, so no doubt I'll hear back from them soon.
As for uninstalling the PPC version prior to installing this one; what for? Are you suggesting that the PPC has to be connected before I can install the package to the PC? That'd be odd. Well, okay, if that's possible I'll just try that with my iPAQ now.......
Okay, uninstalled Sprite's previous version from the 3835, connected under Activestink, and tried a few more times to install this version. Identical error, right on schedule. It has nothing to do with a device being connected to the PC.
So I'm back to being mystified, and suspecting the software. I've installed a dozen programs to the Dell in the past week via the PC (there having been a flurry of interesting new freewares released in PC-based installer packages), and none gave any hint of a problem like this. I've never seen this error in probably over 1000 installs. Completely confusing.
.
.
I had PocketBackUp on my PC and Sprite 2.1.2 on my Axim.
I did what the FAQ said to do: Uninstall Any & ALL versions of PocketBackUp/Sprite from BOTH devices........REBOOT (Soft Reset), then install to PC and reboot again.
At that point it makes no difference whether or not your PPC is connected. If it is, Installation will commence immediately, if it's not connected it willimmediately install upon your next connection.
After installation is complete, You must reconfigure Sprite 3.0 TOTALLY.
I did all of this this afternoon and had (and have had) absolutely no problems with it.

Mr. Klaatu; I'm not sure if you're scolding me or not? I have tried uninstalling any and all components of Sprite stuff from both the PPC and PC, rebooted a pile of times, and then tried to install. Yes, I did read before I started all this, and yes, I did follow directions. Maybe yours is just for comparison? ack.
You might have to search your PC's registry for sprite and delete any keys that refer to sprite or sprite backup. Do this only if you're comfortable editing your registry.
All I had to do was uninstall the application in add remove programs on my PC. Then 3.0 installed on my PPC just fine. Oh yes I did use pocket mechanic to remove any registry entries that still existed.

Remove registry data... if I'm comfortable... me, the guy people on Brighthand and PocketPCPassion pray to for answers when they have registry problems...
What part of my earlier "I have thoroughly uninstalled the application and any residual files and registry data from the PC... " was unclear?
.
. Now, now Gerard.........settle down, we're all just trying to help. Another outburst like that and you'll get a time-out. Is thatclear enough for you??!!
Sounds like time for a good old fashioned Hard Reset. Something is apparently jinked-up on your device.
