Well I read all the hype, and when I saw that XP skin, I thought "Yeah baby! That's for me!". So I spent the bucks to get the latest version and installed the XP skin. After quite a bit of finagling I actually had it working.

Personally, I didn't see what the big deal was. I thought it was cumbersome to use, and customizing it was a bigger pain than I personally wanted to get into. I deleted it after just a few hours when I noticed that my Ax was running a lot slower than it had been.

Now, that might be just the way I have my Ax configured:
Axim X5 400mhz
256 mb CF card
Other stuff not necessarily related to performance...

I am getting a 256 mb SD card this week, so p'raps I'll try it again. So far, however, I'm pretty satisfied with the normal setup. I would like to learn how to optimize memory usage so my Ax runs at its best, so if you have other ideas, thanks for sharing them.

Running skins of the SD card will slow it down. The SD cards arn't had fast compared with a CF card or install the skins in main memory which soups up the space. But you can try it out the see the difference in speed. I don't notice a speed decrease when using the last (registered) beta.

Peace,
Henk

Isn't PPX in your startmenu? Did you install PPX in main?

Peace,
Henk.

PPX Beta News

This was recently posted on our website by Michael, but i thought that i'd post it here as well so those of you following PPX can see some of the newest advancements that will be comming out shortly in the latest beta.

Yes the meters are skinable and they work in PPX without the need for any today plugins, so now that's just one less plugin you'll need to have running.

We are still working the WM 2003 SE issues on VGA devices (Toshiba e80x). The taskbar is fine but there are still a couple things left to be addressed on the desktop.

Also there are a couple new features in the next beta that I am sure many will enjoy. Here are a couple:
  • Skinned memory meter. Can be dragged and dropped like any other slot.
  • Skinned battery meter. Can be dragged and dropped like any other slot.
  • On the fly background image switching. No need to unload and reload PPX. Just replace the background image (or any other image) and PPX loads the new image automatically. You can even assign slots to background images and when tapped, PPX loads the new image.
Sample screenshot of how the next beta is shaping up:
