Mapopolis and Holux - Great Combo!!
I spent allot of time researching a driving map program and GPS to use with my Axim/400, and I finally decided on Mapopolis.
I purchased Mapopolis (navigator) to use along with my Holuz 270. This is the best mapping/gps application I have seen. It is very fast, with excellent quality maps. The voice prompts are very clever, as well as the text directions. As far as battery life goes when using this combo, at full charge, I drove 1:20, with battery on one setting up from dim, and used 25% of the battery.
The selling points:
Price - $99.00 for the US map pack (ONLINE), good for one year of downloads, and maps never expire. Software is free and updated often. I got my Holux for $149.00.
Holux acquires fast, within one to two minutes when warm, and no more then four when cold.
Map Quality - Accurate and up to date maps. A road was permanently diverted by my home about 5 months ago, and it was correctly displayed (Not a major route either). Even small bends in roads are shown correctly. One thing to note, is that the re is a big difference between the basic maps and the navigator quality.
Speed - I have my maps stored on my 256sd card (all of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island), and they load up quick.
Active routing - If you go the wrong way, or leave the route, it looks for a better way, or shows you where to turn around. It will reroute you within a few seconds.
Text display and voice directions - very clever text displays, and intersection graphics. The voice prompts are simple, but accurate and effective.
Excellent customer services - I emailed them to enquire about future versions, and some of these wish list items (see shortcomings). They responded within one hour!!
The shortcomings of the program are as follows:
No custom routes, or waypoint stop scheduling (Supposedly To be addressed in future versions)
Disparity between quickest route, and fastest route is too big (either its country roads, or highways). They are supposedly adding Freeways/Favor Freeways/Neutral Treatment of Freeways in a future version.
No save or load routes - no way to save a route, or send one to someone else. This is not really a big issue until (or if) they add custom routing.
So there you go, and no I don’t work for either company, but just wanted to share my experience with you.
