I've noticed that all the new HP's get a universal remote controller program that seems to work slick. I think its jack that we don't get this on our Dell's. I've been searching around and can only find "free to try" but eventually must buy software to do this. Does anyone know of any free software to do this? Thanks! :)
Of course, it looks like crap and provides less functionality a $2.00 universal remote from wal-mart.....but hey, most of these people are just looking for a toy anyway.
PDAwin is the only choice for true universal remote functionality.

That is one reason why Dell PDAs cost so much less than HP's for similar features. They do not include a lot of extra apps which would increase the price of the PDA.
I use the TV remote controller from PDAWin. It's a very powerful program and worth the price. It has learning capability so you can teach it any remote. It also has voice command capability.
I think I am going to try out these for my X5... I know it is very short range...but I would like it as a back up...
Either I loose the remotes...batteries run out...you always need to be prepared...;)
If anyone tries that free one let me know if it works... I would like to use the free one just cause I will barely use the X5 as a remote controller...

I think the UltraMote Extender cards are the only ones available now. You have to buy their (inferior to pdaWIN) software, but the card works fine with pdaWIN.
You might give Laser.com a try. They're the British company that bought ElectricDog, who used to make a CFIr. Laser doesn't list them in a quick search, but you could email them I guesss

PDAWin is the best program. I've looked at ALL of them. I'll go freebie anytime I can, but it cannot look like crap. and in the remote control department the free or nearly free just look ugly and are not as robust.

I've been testing a few Universal Remote applications on my X50V (I miss my Nevo from my HP 2215) and there seems to be some significant difference in range between the various products. PDAWin has been the shortest range of the ones I've tried so far at only about 8-10 feet. Remote Controller II seems to be the strongest easily handling the 15 or so feet across my living room, but this one was a bear to uninstall (thought I was going to have to do a hard reset to get rid of it). Total Remote from Griffin Technologies also has ample range for my needs, maybe not quite as stong as Remote Controller II. So far I don't like any of them as well as I did Nevo or even Clie Remote on my Sony Clie. Total Remote is the only one, so far that has a pretty good selection of device profiles already installed. The others pretty much expect you to create your own with the learning function or find Pronto device profiles for your equipment and install them (both a pain IMO). If I had to make a decision from these three, WinPDA is definitely a no go, due to the range issue. Total Remote would probably be my uninthusiastic choice.
