Question Question about Pocket Informant

I have been looking to use an alternative PIM as I don't use Outlook on my laptop and it wouldn't be feasible for me to start at this point. I have read several articles as well as many posts about Pocket Informant and I have the following questions:

1. Is Pocket Informant independent of any use of Outlook, both on my x50v and on my laptop?

2. With Pocket Informant, is there a way to add information/edit information on my PDA via my laptop?

3. Does Pocket Informant back up the data you enter into your PDA somewhere on your laptop/desktop so it can be restored should you have to do a hard reset or whatever might require restoring you information/calendar/contacts/etc?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

PI users the same databases as PocketOutlook. So in answer to your questions:

1) No and No
2) Not directly withing PI but other programmes are available allowing you to control your PPC from your desktop.
3) No - as it uses your Outlook databases.

Sorry for all the negative responses.

If there is no way you can use Outlook - what PIM do you use on your laptop? as Intellisync or similar may be able to sync with your PDA (the databases of which PI can then use)

If you don['t use any PIM then your best solution would be to use PI AF on your PDA and install a good back-up programme sych as Sprite back-up (which can back-up to a external card).

Thanks for the advice, Rob.

A lot of my reasoning for not using Outlook is part logistics but also that past versions I've used have been so full of security holes and lousy at filtering spam it's really not been worth it as I primarily just use a web-based interface for my email.

From a PIM standpoint, for years I was a Palm user, most recently a Handspring Visor Edge. But compared with what can be accomplished in the PPC format, Palm's PIM really didn't seem all that flexible to me and the interplay between desktop XP and Windows Mobile sold me on making the switch to the PPC format.

I'm very intrigued at the idea of using PI stand-alone on my x50v and then backing up with a program such as Sprite to a memory card. That, at least right now as a newbie to the PPC format in my situation, seems to be the most practical.

Why not install Outlook but not set it up to read your email accounts - that way you can use it a desktop application - without worryiong about any security holes

This would also allow you to import your contacts from your Palm - Sync with your PPC (to get all your contacts onto your PPC) and also act as a back-up.

Just a suggestion
