Microsoft's Remote Control Display difficulties

Hi folks,

I've had the Microsoft's Remote Control Display (RemoteDSP.exe is the installer) software for a few months and I think I just don't have things set up properly. Maybe someone can help me. I'm thinking a clean install might be best. But before I do that, let me describe what I think is wrong.

I was hoping that when I had the Axim connected and ran the desktop side software that it would automatically connect and display the PDA screen on the desktop. That's not what happens. I have to start the desktop software and then run the PDA software. Then I have to tap Connect. After that is a dialog with Hostname: PPP_PEER that I have to click OK. Then the PDA screen appears on my desktop. Is that really how this thing is supposed to work?

Yep, that's how it works. If you want automatic connections, try dotPocket. Google for it.

I believe what you stated is how it works.

There is another freeware program called rCE which works just like Microsoft's program.

rCE is very small, and simple to use.

http://www.freewareppc.com/communication/rce.shtml

With rCE, all you need to do is copy a tiny 11k file caled rCE.dll into your PPC \Windows folder.

Then execute 48K file rCE.exe on your desktop. Then once the desktop program is running, in the top menu bar select File > Connect, and your PPC will be displayed on your desktop.

I personally like rCE better than Microsoft's Remote Display.

You can also use rCE for doing quick screen captures to your PC clipboard by hitting ALT + Print Screen on your Desktop PC. Then you can just paste them into a program like Microsoft Paint or into a really great freeware PC graphics program called Irfanview.

And you can use the rCE "Send Text" option to send text from PC based applications using clipboard (copy/paste) directly into PPC applications, like Notes, etc.

Cool. That's a lot more like what I was expecting. It scared me for a moment since the color palette was off but once I fixed that it was great. Plus, unlike the Microsoft version, you can use the numeric keypad to enter numbers.

That IS a cool thing. Couldn't do THAT with Microsoft.

But what does the Send window message option mean?

I forgot to mention, that I set my rCE Options to 24bit on both settings. That gives you a high quality display on your PC.

Not sure about the Send Window Message option? If you figure it out, let me know. :)

What have you set the auto refresh interval to? Something is causing my ActiveSync to seriously misbehave. It's disconnecting/throwing errors/etc.

I've tried 0ms, 50ms, & 100ms so far

There is a version of MS Cerdisp thst doesn't require a PPC client to run:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=74473fd6-1dcc-47aa-ab28-6a2b006edfe9&displaylang=en

Everything can be executed from the desktop application. (Assuming Activesync is enabled)

I have it set at 0ms. Seems to work fine for me.

But I do occasionally have my ActiveSync drop with an error, but not often.

Whenever it happens, I just pull it from the cradle, and put it back in, to re-establish the connection, and then activesync runs ok the next time it runs.
