No sub-folders displayed in Pock.Excel?

Have read manual, and searched forums, but found nothing that specifically refers...

Does anyone have a FAQ about folders, etc.? Some specific questions:

1) In "File Explorer", under My Device, there is a folder caled "My Documents". I understand (believe) that this is the one that get's synch'd to the equivalent on the docked-to PC. But there is also another "My Documents" under "Built-in storage". But that one's empty. I do not currently use any additional memory cards - so what's the "Built-in Storage", and why the 2 different "My Documents" folders..??

2) In the (main?) My Documents folder, there were some pre-set sub-folders (Business, Personal, etc.). So I created some sub-folders in "Personal" (called "Ex-Psion" - contains Pocket Excel workbooks converted during synch from Excel 97 Workbooks, and "Music" - contains mp3's). But when I run Pocket Excel, and try to "open" a workbook, the folder navigation shows all the pre-configured folders within "My Documents", but does not show sub-folders - so I cannot get to my "Ex-Psion" workbooks using this method. Is this correct behaviour?? (I can use File Explorer and tap on the workbook to open it, but the above seems strange behaviour)...

Are there restrictions on where data files can be/should be kept within PocketPC OS? Everything under one location (My Documents) seems a good idea (for synch purposes), but if apps can only navigate one further level (to the pre-set folder list level), for file open/save, then that seems a bit of a restriction?

As an aside, any good recommended published books on PocketPC (hardware, OS, etc.)?

Thanks,

P.

As for question 1, the two "My Documents" folders, one is the main one in RAM that will get wiped out if you do a hard reset. The other one under "Built-in storage" is in the available RAM space on the unit and will remain.

As for question 2, that is normal behaviour. If you open pocket word or pocket excel, they will only display files in the main "My Documents" or in one of the system sub-folders beneath it. Other folders you create within that directory structure will not be shown. However, you can still create folders under there and place files in them and then access them via File Explorer. Just tap on a file and it will be opened with its associated app.

1)My Device\My Documents contained in RAM may or may not (in my case) get wiped out when you do a hard reset. The PPC will always look for My Documents or eventually it will create a file called ignore_my_docs, that is if you open Word or Excel, etc.

As for the Built-in Storage, that's the memory in Flash ROM you have left over (The OS only takes up so much, and Dell was nice enough to let you use the rest for storage). The My Documets was created there so you won't get that ignore_my_docs file created. If you delete that folder eventuall that ignor file will be created. It will do the same thing to your memory cards too if you have them inserted.

2)You should be able to access the subfolders in My Documents when you open Excel.
If you have, first make sure your Excel isn't running in your Axim's memory. Then reestart it and see if the folders took.
If not, make sure Excel isn't running in your memory again, Delete the folders that you have created in My Documents and open your Excel, go to the drop down list where it says all foldersright below the Start and at the bottom of that drop-list tap on Add/Delete... and add you folder from there.

It's a limitation of PocketPC that the apps can only look down two levels in the directory. So in main memory you can see documents and folders in \My DOcuments\Folder1 but not \My Documents\Folder1\Folder2. Also, on the storage cards, the first level is taken by the card name, so all the apps can see is \SD Card\My Documents, and not \SD Card\My Documents\Folder1.

However, as TSB8C said, you can use File Explorer to get into those lower folder and tap on the file to open it.

Oops. Sorry. That's right. it only goes 2 levels of directory. The way I suggested it was creating your subs in My Docs and not My Docs\Personal\Ex-Psion or w/c ever your subs may be.

THANKS TO ALL RESPONDANTS !!

Thanks for the responses. Don't know why it seems so difficult to find these sorts of plain simple (IMPORTANT!) facts elsewhere (like the Axim manual, or PocketPC Application Help on the device, etc.)....

Thanks again.
