Question Can't Register McAfee VirusScan PDA

Hi,

I ordered McAfee VirusScan PDA with my x50v and it installed nicely but when I try to register it through the hyperlink that they email me I get the message:

You have reached this page because your original device ID was invalid or has already been used for this product promotion.
If you need to reinstall your service, please login with your user name and password.

McAfee says to contact Dell but I thought that I might give you guru's a shot at this

This is very frustrating. Help!

I would call Dell. Many members here including me do not run any Anti-virus program.

I feel your pain. I experienced the same thing, and after doing a little research discovered that there are a LOT of people experiencing it. It appears that McAfee isn't recognizing the 12-month subscription that we purchased from Dell. At the core, it's a dispute between Dell and McAfee, and neither seem particularly concerned about resolving it. If you pursue it with McAfee they'll try to sell you a subscription. Some reports indicate that they were able to work it out, others were not.

I decided that it wasn't worth the hassle, and emailed Dell CS with a refund request (it was well within the 21 days). Dell responded with a refund, no problem, no argument.

Based on what I've seen, McAfee's PDA AV is garbage anyway (can't say I'm impressed with ANY of their products these days). If you want AV for your Axim on a single-user basis, I'd suggest Symantec (Norton) AV for PDA. I haven't bought it yet, because I'm discussing with my Corporate MIS Director getting the PDA module added to our company-wide license for Symantec NAV-CE (Corporate Edition), which is the very best Enterprise AV solution on the market. If I lose that battle I'll buy a standalone copy.

Personally, I don't think the McAfee PDA AV is worth wasting a lot of time over. Ask Dell for a refund and use the CD as a mini-frisbee. :)

Great to hear. I just bought an x50v and didn't buy the mcafee av cause I don't like their software and I also use symantec corporate. But I was just having second thoughts, but now I'm glad I didn't get it. I also am looking at the Symantec version. Someone on here mentioned they don't run AV on their PDA, what's your opinion about that? What is the danger? In other words are there that many threats out there being written for PDA? I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they are.

I'm not sure if there are any threats specific to PPC at this point, but as you say, "it's just a matter of time." With the large number of PPC users that are around, IMHO no corporate network should be without SAV-CE with the PDA module included. Not using AV on PDA's connected to the network opens up a huge opportunity to compromise the network. We don't have the PDA module yet, but I'm hoping for it soon. SAV-CE is MANDATORY on all other machines on our network. Period. PDA's should be treated the same, IMHO.

Perhaps with the advent of Microsofts venture into AV software they will also create something for Pocket PC? Assuming legal action isn't taken if they try to include it in the next OS version.

I was just beginning to think that Dell had turned around, I mean the Axim x30 I know for a fact is absolutely great, but I'm so frustrated with their support that I'm about to stop advocating Dell again. McAfee's support sucks too, they keep telling me to call the other one but nobody is trying to fix the problem.

{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:04:07 PM} Thank you for contacting Dell Consumer Technical Chat Support for Desktop, Printers and Electronics & Accessories. My name is Amit. How may I assist you today?
{ 5:04:18 PM} I purchased McAfee PDA from you with my new Axim X30, it will not update. I've contacted them, they keep telling me to contact you, I've called Dell, nobody seems to know what's going on so then they hang up on me. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, soft reset, and hard reset several times...your email support has even resorted to sending me a link to a Jr. college to ask them for support. Now, if you can't help me please give me a phone number to someone who can, preferrable someone who speaks english well. I am very angry with Dell's customer support right now, I'm not trying to be a ****, but this has been going on for two weeks. There is a problem somewhere and neither Dell or McAfee seems to be making an attempt to fix it.
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:05:33 PM} Please give me a minute to review your question and in the mean time could you please give me the system shipping address and the telephone number.

{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:06:26 PM} Thank you for the information.
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:07:23 PM} Please give a moment while I am searching for the information required to resolve the concern.
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:10:43 PM} Please give few more moments while I am still searching for the information required to resolve the concern.
{ 5:11:26 PM} ok
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:12:28 PM} Dave the McAfee Pda that u have require the following system specification to work

PDA Platforms: Dell Axim™ X5 with either the Microsoft® PocketPC® 2002 or Microsoft® PocketPC® 2003 operating system

Size requirements: 400K of available space on the PDA device

PC Platforms: Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition, Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional SP2 and later, Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional and Home Editions

Additional PC Requirements: Microsoft® ActiveSync® 3.5, 3.6, or 3.7
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:13:12 PM} and I think your Axim fulfill all the requirements.
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:13:17 PM} Am I correct?
{ 5:13:36 PM} yes it does
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:14:38 PM} So if it is not working, you need to contact McAfee for the concern as the system that you have fulfill all the requirements that are required.
{ 5:16:05 PM} I've contacted them, they keep telling me to contact you...after all, Dell sold it to me, not McAfee
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:17:44 PM} Yes Dave, but we can support you only if there is a problem with the axim.
{Sudhanshu_Bhatt 5:17:53 PM} Now they can only support you.
